Josiah squeezed James' hand so hard that he probably hurt her but he couldn't seem to make himself let go until he'd drawn a few deep, shaky breaths and used them to shove his loss and fear and anger down into his gut. "Yeah, it's time for food."
Bobby was shooting James a very suspicious look over the top of his little brother's head. "Dun want any bacon," he said.
"Yes, you do," countered little Sammy. "You always want bacon."
"Not today I don't, you idjit."
Josiah sighed and scooped Sammy up in his arms when the name calling caused more tears to well up in his eyes. "None of that, Bobby. C'mon." He took the older boy's hand and led him toward the kitchen, leaving the open door to James. Josiah glanced back to James and sent her a weak smile.
