Entry tags:!complete, character: daphne greengrass, character: theodore nott, time: 1998-02

WHO: Daphne and Theo
WHEN: Saturday afternoon
WHERE: Around the castle (Slytherin dungeons and the library).
WHAT: Theo meets up with Daphne to head to the library and spend some time together away from all the other wacky Slytherins.
RATING: PG to PG-13ish
STATUS: COMPLETE.

Theodore raised an eyebrow at Daphne's last reply to the entry in his journal, wondering what she meant by it as he closed the journal and packed it away with the other books he'd already thrown into his book bag. He had spent the morning reading a new Healing textbook his House Elf, Poppy, had sent him by owl yesterday and hadn't been keeping up with much of anything that was going on as a result.

He had unfortunately spent little time with Daphne that week outside of class and the Slytherin common room, so he was anxious to see her and to get to spend some time away from the ridiculousness that came with their House. Tracey's outburst yesterday had finally been enough for him and he didn't really feel like being around anyone at the moment - with Daphne being the exception, of course.

Theo snatched his book bag up off the end of his bed, threw it over his shoulder, and headed out of the seventh year Slytherin boys' room in the direction of the common room. He ran a hand through his hair as he paused to look around the room in search of Daphne. He finally spotted her sitting in a chair over in one of the darker corners of the room and smiled softly to himself as he remembered she said she might have taken to hiding from Tracey. He crossed through the common room, not bothering to pay attention to the rest of the members of his House as he passed them by.

"Hey you," he said, once he was standing in front of her.

Daphne looked up at him with a small smile as he approached. She had her bookbag with her, having decided it was safer than her going back upstairs, afraid of running across Tracey (who wasn't very happy with her at the moment).

She stood up and stepped forward to give him a quick hug. "Hey yourself," she replied, stepping back again to pick up her bag. "Ready to accompany me to the library so that you can protect me?" she added jokingly. "Or rather go spend time with me before Tracey kills me?"

After hugging her back, Theodore arched an eyebrow at what she had to say. "Why do I get the feeling like I'm missing something here?" He really ought to put his books down a little more often, it seemed.

"Why do you need protecting from Tracey?" Theo asked, taking ahold of one of Daphne's hands as they started toward the exit. He knew Tracey was in a foul mood, but she seemed to have always gotten along with Daphne, at least.

Daphne had the decency to look sheepish. "Katie Bell posted up that truth or dare entry and dared me to hit Tracey," she admitted. "So I may have possibly smacked her when she wasn't paying attention..." A blush had started blossoming across her face as she continued. "I may have then ran, making her believe it was Draco until I'm sure Malfoy ratted me out."

She looked up at him with a small grin. "Stop me next time before I take part in something like that again, please?" she laughed.

A rather impressed look crossed Theodore's face as he listened to Daphne's tale. He'd always known that she was different from the other girls in Slytherin and this definitely proved it - he didn't care if it was just a dare. He paused in the dark dungeon hallway they were walking through at the moment to stop and give her a quick kiss for what she'd done - she'd earned it, most definitely.

Theo grinned as they started on their way to the library once more and he chuckled, shaking his head at her request. "But if I did that I wouldn't get to hear the stories afterward. Besides, I don't think she'd really try anything - she likes you too much." Tracey may be evil incarnate to the outside world, but Theo knew she at least cared about the people she considered to be her friends.

Daphne had actually been expecting him to shake his head at her for what she had done - or even lecture her. Tracey wasn't a very well liked person but that didn't mean that someone should go around hitting her. Not that she had hit her very hard seeing as how she really didn't have it in her to knock someone out.

So when he stopped and kissed her, she had to laugh softly. "She must have really annoyed you if I'm not getting a lecture how why it's a bad idea to hit people who can smother you at night." she replied with a smile. "Not that I'll ever complain, especially if hitting someone gets me that response."

She then shook her head. "I don't think she likes me much at the moment."

Theo let out a long sigh, dragging the fingertips of the hand that wasn't holding Daphne's along the dungeon corridor's wall. "I don't know, Daph...it just seems rather childish to go around picking on people all the time. I guess she just really got under my skin yesterday. That's probably what she wanted to do, actually...at least with the others anyway."

He had been really good at keeping his opinions to himself over the years, but Theo guessed he had finally just grown tired of overlooking and excusing his housemates. He did smile, however, and joked with her, "Well, don't go making a habit out of it, you might wind up in detention again."

He squeezed Daphne's hand in reassurance. "She'll get over it."

Daphne squeezed his hand back before resting her head against his arm as they headed towards the stairs that would lead them out of the dungeon. "Don't worry - I do believe my days of hitting people are over seeing as how it hurt for one and I'd rather not give her a reason to hex me," She paused before chuckling. "So I guess that means I'll never get the chance again to have a deep and meaningful conversation with our dear Head of House."

She couldnt hide the impish grin that appeared soon after. "Now who will stimulate my mind with intellectual topics?"

"Good," he replied, as they climbed the stairs that led to the rest of the castle. "I would have to duel her or something if she hexed you and even though it's Tracey, I'd hate to have to duel a girl."

Theodore blinked a few times once they got into the better lit area of the castle, his eyes readjusting from the darkness of the dungeons. "That's a shame that you'll miss out on those, however. He and I had the best of chats when I was in detention with him. He's quite the talker once you get him going...can't ever really get a word in edgewise."

He pretended to think seriously about her question for a moment, tapping his finger to his chin. "Well, I'm sure Filch would always appreciate the company," he teased. "Though as far as intellectual topics go, you might be better off with Flitwick."

Daphne couldn't help it - she shot him a look before fluttering her eyelashes at him. "Aw, you would defend my honor like that?" she teased before laughing. "I'll make sure you don't have to duel a girl even though that would be a bit...interesting to watch."

She squinted as they made it to the main part of the castle. "I feel quite jealous suddenly. All he did was glower at me the entire detention as if I had grown horns." She looked up at him, the impish look back on her face. "Does this mean I need to worry about you disappearing on me to chat with Snape?"

At his suggestion, she snorted. "Sure, let me chat with the professor of my most dreadful class. He could show me how to swish and flick properly."

"I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but I thought I'd go up to Snape on Monday morning and profess my undying love for him. I simply cannot bear the agony of not knowing how he really feels about me any longer."

Theodore managed to keep a straight face for a few moments after he was done speaking, but could not hold his laughter in for very long. "What can I say, it's the hair," he managed, in between chuckles.

The tops of his ears turned pink when Daphne talked of being shown how to swish and flick properly, causing him to mentally chastise himself for taking what she had said in such a manner. "I...m-maybe he would find it admirable that you were seeking extra help in his class?"

"Break my heart, why don't you?" Daphne replied, her hand moving up to cover her heart dramatically. "Left for Snape of all people - and no less because of his hair when I've tried so hard to keep mine nice and shiny." She proceeded to push playfully at him before sticking her tongue out.

She didn't notice his reaction to her comment, thankfully. "You know me, always wanting to do my best in class no matter what I have to do, even it means proper swish and flick training." she replied before looking up at him, a small smirk appearing. "Unless someone else wanted to help me..."

Theodore squeezed her hand and grinned down at her, as they started climbing the stairs that led to the library. "Actually, now that I think about it, I do like your hair better. Even when it's pink or green," he told her with a wink.

He felt the heat from his ears spread down to his cheekbones, a sure sign that he was blushing in Daphne's presence once again. He knew that she didn't mean for it to be taken in such a manner, but the teenage boy in him couldn't help it. He chuckled nervously and hoped it wasn't too obvious, saying, "I could help you with your Charms work, sure."

Daphne chuckled softly, squeezing his hand in return. "Good to know seeing as how I still am rather dreadful in charms and will probably change my color again by accident," she joked, reaching up to finger a strand of blonde hair. "The pink kinda grew on me after a while...at least until Pansy turned it bogey green..."

She looked up in time to see the blush, her eyebrows lifting slightly. "Why in Merlin's name are you blushing?" she laughed, curiosity shining in her eyes. She couldn't think of what he could possibly be thinking about as she doubted her hair was a reason to blush. The subject was soon dropped as she tilted her head. "Help would be very much appreciated before I injure someone."

"Oh? What color do you think you'll try for next?" Theodore asked, nudging her ever so slightly with his elbow. "I did rather like the pink, to be perfectly honest. I'm sure I'll like it whatever color you manage to turn it to," he confessed, as he tucked some of her hair behind her ear.

For a brief moment, Theo turned even more red because she'd noticed him blushing. He did his best to stall until she changed the subject and tried to make sure he got his blushing under control.

"You could always practice on Tracey in the hopes that you do," he said, trying to keep an innocent look on his face. He eventually smiled and nodded, "Whenever you wish to work on it, we'll do so. Even today, if you really want to. Deal?"

They'd finally reached the library and Theodore headed over to his favorite corner spot in the back. It had the squishiest chairs, decent lighting, and a low table to spread your work out on. Thankfully it wasn't taken yet that afternoon. "Have anything in particular that you needed to work on?"

Daphne crinkled her nose up at him. "I don't know - I was thinking I'd give purple a whirl, you know...see if I like it as much as I liked the pink," she joked, surprised when he touched her hair but not minding it at all. "As long as I stay away from bright colors like orange - I can't imagine looking like a Weasley. Definitely don't have the skin tone for it."

She paused, noticing the blush again but since he had successfully veered away from his reasoning for it the last time, she chose to not question it again despite her curiosity as to just what he was thinking to get such a lovely shade of red on his cheeks.

Nudging him, she smiled. "Now, now, Theo...don't you know that you aren't supposed to injure someone who can sleep attack you?" she teased. "Tracey has the ability to take pictures of me in my pajamas with wild hair right after I wake up - I'd rather not take that chance as it's not a pretty sight."

She let him lead her over to the corner and smiled. "I have a bit of Transfiguration homework to do," she started off before smirking slightly. "Then perhaps a little help with my swish and flick motion..." She was catching on. "Or I could just sit here and read."

"I bet you look lovely," he said, referring to her appearance in the morning. She had put a rather cute image into his head, at any rate. "Is Tracey above being bribed to take said pictures?" Theodore grinned wickedly at Daphne, but was merely teasing her once again, however.

He avoided her eyes when she brought up the Charms work again and busied himself with digging books out of his bag. He knew that he was starting to blush again, but thankfully the lighting in the corner wasn't so bright that she would be able to notice - at least he hoped this was the case, at any rate.

"I have a few Arithmancy problems left to work on and a few more runes to translate, but nothing too pressing. And I did bring a new Healing book my house elf sent me."

Daphne made a face at him. "Don't even try it, Nott." she warned because laughing as she dropped her bookbag next to a chair before shaking her finger at him in a warning manner. "I'll find a way to get you back if you do that."

Sitting down, she pulled out her Transfiguration book before glancing up, trying to not chuckle at the look on his face, knowing he was blushing. She couldn't help but wonder what it was about her saying "flick and swish" that caused that reaction and decided she'd have to find out. Which is what brought on her next comment.

"Perhaps I could get you back by saying 'flick and swish' to see your reaction."

He laughed and held his hands up in a sign of mock surrender, saying, "Alright, alright. I won't ask her out of fear of incurring the wrath of one Miss Daphne Greengrass." He smiled warmly at her and leaned across to give her a quick kiss on her cheek before sitting down in the chair next to hers.

Theo had opened his new book on Healing and had started to idly flip through it, when she brought up the 'swish and flick' thing again. Glad that he was currently bent over the book he sighed softly and mentally shook his head. He was never going to live this down, apparently.

"Perhaps," he said with a hint of amusement in his voice as he kept his eyes on the page. "Though if you keep saying it, it'll loose it's effect eventually."

"Plus if you're nice enough, I may provide the picture myself," Daphne replied with a small smile when he kissed her cheek. "Maybe."

She flipped through her Transfiguration book, chuckling at his reaction to the 'swish and flick' response. "Ah yes, it may lose it's effect however I'm determined to find out just why you start to blush when I say it," she shot back, the small smile reappearing as she looked up at him. She was silent for a moment, eying him thoughtfully until it dawned on her.

Her face went bright red before she could stop it. "Oh Merlin, do I even want to know how you made that dirty?" she asked, laughing softly.

Theo laughed softly along with her, but kept his eyes on his book in hopes of keeping this silly blushing problem under control. He shook his head and smiled, saying, "No, you probably don't. Sorry."

He flipped to the next page and added, "Perhaps it's just Tracey and her delightfully filthy mind forcing mine into the gutter." He raised an eyebrow and finally looked up at Daphne, "You mean to tell me she's never caused that sort of thing to happen to you?"

Daphne was still red when he looked over at her and she tried to unsuccessfully cover it by ducking her head so that her hair cover (some) of her face (but not enough). She thought back to a conversation she and Tracey had recently, about Theo no less, and groaned inwardly as the damnable blush deepened.

"She has and to be honest I don't think she was even trying to at the time," she finally admitted. "I guess between being friends with her for so long and being a typical teenager, there was no getting away from it."

She busied herself digging a quill from her bag. "I guess even the innocent ones can't stay innocent for long." Merlin, shoot me now...

A knowing smile spread across Theo's face as he watched Daphne turn as red as he had been a moment ago. At least he wasn't the only one out of the pair of them whose mind occasionally strayed into the gutter.

He chuckled and went back to reading his book, "I'm sure we'll be perfectly alright, Daphne. Even with the occasional 'swish and flick' double meaning."

Daphne waited until he went back to reading to stick her tongue out at him. She settled back into the chair and busied herself with her homework. "Now I'm wondering if I should have you help me with my wandwork," she teased. "Or if you'll be thinking dirty thoughts."

She shifted in the chair, tucking her feet up under her as she worked, happy to find that she didn't have much homework after all. Every now and then she'd glance over at him, a small smile on her face.

"I guess you'll never know," he teased back, with a sly smirk. "If I can manage to keep a straight face, that is." Theo hoped he would be able to not start blushing like a fool everytime he did his Charms work from now on, at least.

Theo relaxed back into his chair and put his feet up on the small table in front of him. He went back to reading his textbook and made notes in the margins occasionally with his quill. He caught Daphne smiling at him from time to time and would always return hers. He also managed to steal a few looks of his own without her seeing him.

Once his eyes needed a rest from reading, he marked his page in the book and closed it, stretching in his chair. "So have you thought of another challenge yet?"

Daphne chuckled softly. "I suppose I can take the chance as I really do need help before I blow up something - or turn someone else's hair a strange color," She eyed his for a moment. "You'd look good with blue hair to match your eyes." She smiled sweetly at him before looking back down at her essay.

She caught his smiles back and fought not to blush at them. Every now and then, she felt as if he was watching her but when she'd look up, he'd be staring at his book. With a shake of her head, she finished up her homework and tucked it into her bag.

"I'm still thinking as a really good challenge takes time," she teased, turning to face him. "I thought about something like sneaking off to Hogsmeade one night but then I remember detention..."

"As long as you don't hex my eyebrows off, I should be fine," he joked, but made the mental note to make sure she kept her wand pointed away from him during their tutorials.

Theo snorted about the reminder of their detention and why they'd gotten it. "Pity we aren't as sneaky as some of the other people in the castle whom never seem to get caught. And here I thought we were proper Slytherins and able to get away with such things with ease. Guess we could use a lesson or two," he sighed frustratedly that the one time they'd risked skivving off was the one time Snape just happened to be watching.

"Then stand behind me so you're out of the line of fire," Daphne replied with a smile. "And make sure there's nothing my charm can bounce off of as that's how I ended up with pink hair."

She reached over and squeezed his hand. "And here I was thinking we're stereotypical Slytherin considering what some people say," she teased. "Guess we'll just have to perfect the art of sneaking out without our head of house finding us, right?" She squeezed his hand again. "Don't be frustrated over it - it was worth getting caught."

Theodore rolled his eyes about the 'stereotypical Slytherins' comment. He didn't understand why it was okay for the other Houses seemed to preach about prejudice, yet would constantly stereotype Slytherins publicly. "Bunch of hypocrites, really."

He smiled, though, when she squeezed his hand and he squeezed hers back. "It was worth it. And probably the most fun I've had in a long time. Well, I should say getting to know you better, that is."

Daphne chuckled. "They judge us because of two or three people in our house," she replied. "It's sad really that no one really took the chance to get to know us because of the color tie we wear."

Her eyes lit up suddenly. "Want a small challenge?" she asked, an idea coming to her. Her gaze drifted to the back of the library where it was dark, a place not many students dared to venture due to the rules. "Have you ever been in the restricted section?"

His brows furrowed in slight confusion at what the challenge might be and followed her gaze back to the restricted section of the library. "Only a couple of times, with permission from a professor," he answered, curious as to what she had in mind.

"Every time I attempted to sneak back there, the librarian appeared out of nowhere so I had to pretend to be looking at Herbology books, which are really boring, by the way."

She stood up and held out her hand. "Come on, let's go in there and check out some of the books." A smile appeared. "Need to start off small with our sneaking around practice."

His eyebrow quirked at the comment that Herbology books were boring - they never bothered him, but he supposed that wasn't saying much.

Standing, he took her hand and followed her over to the restricted section and checked to see if anyone was around watching them. When the coast seemed clear, he walked quickly over to the far corner of the section to hide in the shadows.

"Anything in particular you're wanting to read up on?" He asked, as he started looking at some of the spines of the books.

It was only once they were in the shadows that she exhaled and dug out her wand, lighting the tip although dim enough to not be seen. She made a face at him before looking up at the books. "Nothing in particular but I figured things in here must be more interesting than what's out there."

She held her wand up and scanned the spines, wanting to reach out and touch them but resisting as she remembered that some books bit. It still didn't stop her from jumping back when one of them growled at her.

Leave it to Theodore to go into the dark corner of the library where no one was supposed to be with a girl and get distracted by the books there. He followed Daphne's lead after a bit and lit the tip of his wand as his eyes were having trouble adjusting in the dark.

He found a few books of interest (thankfully only one attempted to snatch his hand away from him) and started flipping through them. Completely absorbed in the books, he'd forgotten to keep an eye out for anyone approaching and only looked up when he heard someone's footsteps.

He extinguished his wand and grabbed Daphne, ducking behind a bookshelf with her. He sat crouched down behind it with his arm around Daphne, listening carefully for a moment. When the footsteps were growing softer and retreating, he looked at Daphne and started laughing quietly.

Daphne had been minding her own business, scanning a book about pureblood families (it was a rather insulting book but it fascinated her), unaware of everything around her - even the fact that she was currently alone with Theo in a very dark area of the library - a place that most students may have been having naughty thoughts or even acting upon them. But not these two.

So when Theo suddenly extinguished his wand and grabbed her, she didn't have much time to react other than a soft gasp. Her wand went out as she gripped the book to her, staring off wide-eyed into the dark as she heard the footsteps, happy that he had been paying more attention than her.

She sat there quietly, holding her breath as the footsteps came then thankfully went. She only relaxed when she heard Theo's laugh close by and looked up at him, smiling a bit.

"So, I guess we're not so bad at sneaking around after all," Theo whispered, smiling down at her. "Does this mean I've passed another challenge?" True, they still had to get out of the restricted section at some point, but he was feeling pretty confident now that they would make it without getting caught.

His skin tingled and suddenly he was hyperaware that he was still holding Daphne close in a dark corner of a room. He cleared his throat and dropped his arm, thankful that they were in the dark. He slapped his hands to his thighs and pushed himself up out of the crouch, distracting himself by putting the books he'd taken off the shelves back into their places.

Daphne laughed softly. "It appears that we are much better than we gave ourselves credit for," she agreed, her smile growing. "And yes, you've passed another challenge. Looks like I'll have to be more challenging." she added, not even thinking about having to get out without being caught.

And unlike Theo, she had been quite aware just how close they currently were. And was surprised to realize that she didn't really mind much - in fact, she liked being this close to him. A lot. Which was why she had trouble masking her expression when his arms dropped away, suddenly thankful that it was dark where they were.

She managed to straighten up, smoothing her skirt down as she carried the book she head been reading back over to the shelf to replace it in it's rightful place. She let her fingertips linger on the spine of the book as she exhaled softly before turning around to face him. "Ready to go back to our things?"

Theodore kept his back to Daphne as he was putting away the last of the books he'd taken off the shelves. He heard her sigh and let a sigh out of his own, reaching up to pinch the bridge of his nose with two fingers.

Theodore Nott, you are a ruddy fool, he though, chiding himself. He'd never thought he would be this awkward around a girl, but then again, he'd never really been around a girl on this sort of level before. It wasn't like he was thinking of shagging her or anything - dear Merlin, he couldn't imagine how awkward that would be. But it would be nice to not turn beet red and clam up around her.

Much like the rush of courage he'd felt at the dance, Theo felt emboldened again and turned around to face her, finally. He silently shook his head at her question and walked over to her, lacing an arm around her waist to draw her into him before leaning in to kiss her.

Daphne's brow furrowed when he shook his head. She was about to ask him if they needed to search for another book when she found him in front of her suddenly, pulling her to him. She stumbled slightly having not expected it, turning her head up just in time for their lips to join.

At first she just stood there - similar to the night of the dance - her eyes wide with surprise, wondering what had brought on the sudden change in mind. They had traded small kisses here and there since the dance but there was something different this time.

She relaxed slowly, her hands moving up to rest against his chest as she returned the soft kiss.

Theo raised his other hand and ran his fingertips along her jaw, before threading his fingers into her hair. He relaxed into the kiss and decided to just go with the moment, instead of trying to over-think everything like he was prone to do.

After a few more stolen moments had passed by, he pulled away from her just a hair and smiled softly as he looked into her eyes. "I've no idea if this was your plan all along," he teased breathily, "but I approve."

He drew her in for one more long kiss, before letting his arm slowly drop from around her waist and untangling his fingers from her hair. If he kept it up, he was going to turn into just another one of the horny teenagers that roamed the halls and he respected Daphne more than that.

Theo kissed her cheek softly and took one of her hands in his. "Ready to sneak back out of here?"

Daphne's fingers curled into his shirt as the kiss was extended, her thoughts muddled, something that tended to happen each time that he kissed her. Not that she minded as she found herself enjoying these moments with him.

When he pulled away, she couldn't help but blush, a small smile appearing on her face. "It wasn't my original plan," she whispered softly. "But I have to say that I rather like the turn of events..."

She returned the second kiss, this time not hesitating as the action became more natural. She knew they would have to stop soon - neither of them were the kind to go around snogging like many of their classmates. And she respected him for that, for treating her like that.

She squeezed his hand once they had pulled away again. "I am if you are."
