Sweethearts Dance

WHAT: The Annual Sweethearts Dance
WHO: Current 6th and 7th Years, Hogwarts alumni from 1994 to 1997.
WHEN: Sunday, 5:00PM
WHERE: Hogwarts, Great Hall

The Great Hall is over-the-top but luckily not a deluge of pink. Flitwick and McGonagall charmed and transfigured things to smell sweetly, sparkle, glow in soft pinks and reds, and give a general romantic feel. Think the Yule Ball, where there are round tables set up around the perimeter and an open dance floor. There is an eight-piece orchestra that takes requests, giving contemporary music, even, a classical spin. There is food galore -- mostly sweets but some savory dishes as well. Rose-water punch and strawberry ice cream. Blackberry apple cider. Chocolates. Cakes. Customizable, charmed candy hearts are available to give to your date or your best mate. There are some WWW Valentine's pinwheel fireworks overhead. If you can imagine it, it's happening.

Feel free to comment below with your character's clothes, date, anything of note that happened. Also, feel free to enjoy your own threads or reactions or whatever. Really, have fun.

Harry arrived a little after 5:30 with Ginny on his arm, steadfastly ignoring any whispers that might have broken out. So who cares if he's attending with his ex-girlfriend? He certainly doesn't. He enjoyed the strawberry ice cream and blackberry apple cider. He even danced if Ginny wanted him to.

Though Ginny wasn't one of the Hogwarts girls who had spent weeks planning her every move, she had succumbed to the need to spend most of the day primping. She had shut herself up in her dormitory, and proceeded to spend the rest of the day trying to figure out just what needed to be done to her hair and makeup. The result had been to curl her hair and then pin it up, while keeping her makeup rather natural with the exception of adding a bit of drama to her eyes and a dash of peachy-pink lipstick. But the rest of it, well that had been easy as her wardrobe had been rather limited in dresses that were appropriate for a dance.

Her mum had sent the one that had been given to her at her last birthday, and the shoes they had purchased to match should she ever need to wear it (which had made Ginny wonder if her mum had suspected there would be a dance at Hogwarts). Fleur had lent her a bag and owled a package of accessory options, gifting her the gold band that she had liked the most out of the lot. So, at 5:15 she had strolled down to the Common Room in her oufit, and tried not to laugh at all the princess analogies that were popping into her head. It was so terribly clichè to walk down the stairs and beam at your date, but it had happened and she hadn't really stopped smiling since.

Or staring at Harry, but she was hoping that he wasn't noticing. And if he was he was being polite enough not to comment.

"You know, its not nearly as garish as I thought it'd be," she told Harry once they had made it into the Great Hall. "I think I was waiting for hot pink hearts and cupids tossing confett---" she paused, as small shiny hearts began to float on her head, "Spoke too soon." Ginny said with a shrug, watching as the tiny winged cherub floated off to assault some other unsuspecting guest.

Harry grinned at his date, wondering if it would be too much of a cliche if he mentioned how nice she cleaned up. Probably. Instead, he simply held out his arm and escorted her down to the Great Hall.

"It could always be worse," Harry remarked, running a hand through his hair to get any remaining confetti out. "We could have first and second years running about getting overly hyper on sugar." They would be unbearable other wise, even more than normal. Thankfully it wasn't Harry's responsibility to deal with them more than he had to.

"Did you want to get something to eat or drink?"

Gerard arrived after much debate about whether or not he wanted to go. It was a last minute decision on his part and he hadn't had the time to really considered whether or not he wanted to attend until he started getting dressed. Luckily, his closet was filled to the brim with clothing for events just like these so his last minute choice didn't seem so last minute.

He ended up settling for a grey blazer and trouser combo over a cleaned pressed black button down and a maroon tie before finding his way to the Great Hall.

Thankfully Tracey had the foresight to at least get her hair done by herself earlier in the day before Daphne's panic attack happened - not that she had planned on such a thing to occur. She had put her hair up in the style of a 1940s pin up model and slipped into her dress before she'd gotten Daphne's frantic note.

Once the crisis had been averted, Tracey put the finishing touches on her outfit, that included a pair of simple black kitten heels and small pieces of vintage jewelry. She met Blaise down in the common room on time and they made their entrance to the dance together. Now that they'd been seen by most of the rest of the students, they parted ways for a bit, not entirely keen on keeping each other's company for the rest of the evening.

Tracey looked through the throng of students for someone she knew and her eyes settled upon Gerard, causing her to smile sweetly. She headed over to him and said, "Your tie almost matches my dress, Harper. I think that means you owe me at least one dance."

Gerard hadn't seen Daphne come in, he'd been too busy taking note of all the decorations to have noticed anyone come in but he smiled at her when she caught his attention. "You look lovely." He complimented, holding out a hand. "It'd be a pleasure to dance with you."

Coming to the dance was weird. This was one of the rare occasions where Gerard had the chance to mingle with other students without worrying about homework or something in the back of his mind. He had no excuse not to dance and enjoy the company and he had no need to find an excuse either.

Penelope promised herself she wasn't going to stay very long, but she needed a reason to leave her flat for an evening. Already cursing her choice of footwear as she stepped into the Great Hall, she surreptitiously cast a cushioning charm on the heels. She skirted around a pair of what looked like sixth years already madly in love and snogging, heading towards her old professors to greet and catch up.

Picking up a flute of sparking cider, Penelope took a seat at a table near the orchestra. Too bad they weren't serving real champagne, she mused, but they were at a school and not everyone was an adult.

Chris was having a blast. Who cared whether or not he had a date? His camera was all he needed. There were so many people in a variety of situations that he could easily take pictures all night long. At the moment he had paused to get a drink. Looking around he noticed a young woman sitting alone and he couldn't help but raise his camera and snap a picture.

Theodore/Daphne/Open

Theodore fiddled with his cufflinks as he waited for Daphne to appear in the Slytherin common room that evening. He was never really one for social events or dancing, but he had such a good time with Daphne in London, he figured they couldn't possibly not have fun at the dance as well.

No longer able to sit still, Theo stood up from his chair and started pacing through the crowded common room the best he could. Thankfully everyone's dates started showing up not too much longer after he'd gotten up and couples were leaving the common room to head to the Great Hall, giving him more room to pace.

He cast a wary glance over to the hallway that led to the girls' dormitories and was beginning to worry if Daphne had changed her mind about going with him. He took a deep breath and smoothed out the lines in the tailored black suit he was wearing, checked to see if the buttons on his matching vest were buttoned, made sure the collar of his very dark purple pinstriped button down shirt was straight and loosened the even darker purple tie from around his neck.

Daphne is your friend, she thinks of you as her friend Theodore reminded himself after he'd meticulously worked on making sure his suit was perfect. The common room was almost empty by that point, but he heard one last pair of heels clicking their way across the room from behind him and turned to see if it was Daphne.

Daphne was running late. She knew she was running late - but it had taken a bit of time to calm her down long enough to actually get her dressed, makeup and hair included. Thankfully she had only needed the bag Tracey brought once although she knew there would be weeks of teasing after this.

Smoothing her hands over her dress, she paused at the door to turn around and glance at her reflection one more time. With the help of Tracey and Pansy, they had charmed her dress to be a little less poofy than it originally was (she couldn't go out there looking like a ballerina), her long blonde hair was now pinned back with black jeweled combs and fell in soft curls to her shoulders and her makeup was natural except for the smokey eye Tracey did (there was no way Pansy was allowed to do that from the earlier raccoon comment).

Taking a deep breath, she slipped on the black heels that she had purchased with the dress and headed out before she lost her courage. There was a reason why Daphne wasn't a Gryffindor - this was it.

Swallowing hard, she continued to repeat a mantra in her head as she headed down to the common room. He's just a friend - we're going to this as friends. Bloody hell, I'm going to kill Tracey and Pansy for putting it in my head that I like him... Okay, so that last part wasn't exactly part of her original mantra but she couldn't help it. Thanks to the teasing on top of the actual date, she was now nervous. This was not like her.

With one last deep breath, she stepped out in the common room, a bit surprised to find it empty except for Theo. A smile lit up her face as she made her way over to him. "Hey you...sorry I'm late. Hair emergency." she replied, walking over to him, her eyes roaming over his suit. He looked nice dressed up. Really nice. "And no, I didn't turn it pink again."

Theodore's breath caught in his throat for a moment when he turned around and saw Daphne walking toward him. She was indeed breathtaking - he always knew she was pretty, of course, but tonight she looked absolutely gorgeous. She thinks of you as her friend he reminded himself again for the thousandth time that evening as he fought to keep an even expression on his face.

The corners of his mouth did twitch up into a small smile, however, and he finally recovered enough to speak. "Hey," he replied softly as she walked up, "It's quite alright...you look lovely." He felt the flash of heat on his cheeks and prayed that he just hadn't blushed when he said that, although he knew that he had. The fear that Daphne had decided not to go with him after all was quickly replaced by another - what if she really did only see him as a friend?

He had been pacing so much that he had forgotten the box in his hands - the wrist corsage that he had picked out especially for her. He was worried she might find it a bit silly, but Theo knew that his mother, had she been alive, would have insisted that he get one for Daphne.

Theo held the box out to Daphne and said, "Sorry, I almost forgot...this is for you." He handed the box over to her and did his best to study her reaction without looking like he was doing so. The corsage was made up of simple white roses, but the leaves around them were placed on there by his request. The leaves were from a laurel tree, the myth tied in to Daphne's namesake. He felt himself blush again as he wondered if she would notice that he'd made an effort to put some thought into it.

Draco/Pansy/Open
[info]slytherprince
2012-02-13 02:25 pm UTC (link)
Draco had taken his time getting ready. He really didn't want to go to this dance but he knew Pansy did and had even ordered a special dress for it. So he had pushed aside his dislike of dances to take her. It was the least he could do after ignoring her for weeks on end.

He readjusted his emerald cuff links as he waited, dressed all in black like typical Draco. He figured it would match Pansy's dress no matter what she wore as she hadn't been too keen on showing him and Daphne nor Tracey would share what it looked like. In his hand was a small red rose wrist corsage he had ordered especially for her, wanting to surprise her with a small gift.

Glancing around, he couldn't help but smirk when a nervous Daphne entered the room. He'd have to make a mental note to tease her endlessly later on if Pansy hadn't already. "Come on, Pans..." he murmured, suddenly wondering if she was going to stand him up for making her wait so long.

Pansy had stayed in the bathroom for a few minutes more after helping Daphne get ready. She needed to fix up her hair a bit as well as wanting to make Draco wait for a bit. Once her hair was satisfactory she put on the earrings and necklace she'd borrowed from Daphne and headed off to meet Draco.

She was surprised by her stomach flipping slightly when she saw him waiting for her, shoving the odd feeling down she smoothed her dress and walked slowly up to him.
"Waiting for someone?" she asked, raising an eyebrow in amusement at the look on his face.

Dani did her hair (with blue and gold clips to match her outfit) and makeup with Lisa and Lav and various other girltypes, returning to ravenclaw tower to dress. She came down to the hall with whoever else didn't have a date was all smiles, dancing all night. Yes, in those shoes. She's nothing if not committed. She definitely went to chat to any pro quidditch player she found and hugged Penny (and Cho if she came).

Oliver was always planning on coming to the dance. Not only did he want to see Harry, Ron and the rest of his friends still in Gryffindor, but spending time with his little crew of friends during the dance and after would of course prove interesting. However, Oliver's real purpose in wanting to attend the dance was meeting this Dani girl and seeing if she was as interesting in person as she had been on the journals.

After saying hello to Hermione, Harry, Neville, Ron and Ginny of course, he looked around the room until he spotted a tiny blond in a blue dress, which was of course how she described herself. He plastered a wide smile on his face and walked confidently over, interrupting her conversation with some Ravenclaw to touch her elbow and whisper in her ear, "So, we meet at last."

Terry had debated with himself for a few hours on whether or not to attend the dance, the lack of a date was troubling but the desire to see his female classmates all dressed up had eventually won out.

Dressing casually in the black pants from his suit and a red silk shirt he made he was to the Great Hall.

After a bit of oogling and wandering he found Mike leaning against a wall and decided to join him.

"So maybe Tony isn't better dressed than some of the girls," He said with a laugh as he leaned up against the wall.

Neville/Hermione/Open

At 4:59pm Neville stood nervously in the Gryffindor Common Room, hopping from foot to foot as he stood waiting for Hermione to join him. He wore grey dress robes that, according to his mother, brought out his unique eyes and emphasised his cheekbones. Neville wasn't even sure which part of his face cheekbones were, but as he saw more of his housemates wearing pants and nice tops rather than dress robes, he got more and more nervous. Weren't they meant to wear dress robes, as magical folk?

In order to avoid succumbing to his nerves, Neville pulled out his wand and started polishing it, ignoring the yellow sparks spitting out the end of it. Harry had told him once that had happened to him too, so although he drew curious glances from the people going past him, Neville kept his head down and angled the sparks away from his robes.

Was Hermione going to be on time? She was always on time for class, but he knew she didn't have the same reverence for this...Sweethearts thingy that she did for class. He prayed that she did come on time, though, because otherwise he might melt with anxiety.

((I have never done this before. I hope I did it correctly!))

Hermione had spent all afternoon being held hostage by her dormmates and the other girls in the Room of Requirement, and she was already swearing that she would never touch eyeliner again. She wasn't sure how many bottles of Sleekeazy Lavender had poured over curly mane, but she had to admit that the sparkling, straight tresses that shimmered down her back was almost worth all of the time she had spent being rouged and mascara'd. The most shocking part of the afternoon was how had had let Lavender convince her to wear a dress that made her feel like a cupcake, but when no one was looking, Hermione had ran her fingers over the chiffon skirt and twirled a bit, enjoying how the layers fluttered back in place.

"Merlin, Neville. What on earth are you doing?" Hermione asked, appearing just as the clock struck five o'clock. Her heels clacked slightly as she made her way to where Neville was apparently trying to shower the Common Room in sparks, her brow drawing down in a furrow. She stopped a few feet from him, careful to keep her borrowed skirt out of firing range. She had been surprised when Neville had asked her to the dance, and despite her insistances that she would not think about the dance until it was time to, she had spent a few minutes of her down time a day wondering how tonight would go.

Lisa spent the afternoon getting ready with Dani, Lav, Parvati and Hermione (basically anyone else that was getting ready then), and she spent a considerable time debating on the amount of makeup (generally she wore a lot, but she thought about it and figured Anthony might like less). She waited for Anthony in the Common Room for them to go down together. Yes, she DID find him especially attractive in his suit, but tried not to make a big deal since she knew he was already sensitive about it. She gave him a huge smile when she saw him, and made a grand gesture of giving him her arm.

Once inside the dance, she didn't smother him, but she did stand near him around their friends, and she definitely asked him to dance during the slow numbers. She was a bit more subdued than normal, and she tried to make him feel comfortable so he didn't regret saying yes to coming with her.

When Lisa had asked him, Anthony had been shell-shocked, and didn't find it difficult to tell her yes. But then when he told the other guys about her asking, he became a lot less confident. Maybe this was a mistake. Maybe Lisa was going to drive him insane. Maybe this implied some sort of permanency. He fretted about these things while he debated ties, going off of Chris's advice to stick with solid colours. It was a welcome change from his blue and bronze stripes. He went with a light teal blue.

When he saw Lisa in her pink dress, all smiles, he was looking at a friend, not a love interest. He walked her down to the dance and happily enjoyed the first half of their evening. "I'm glad you asked me," he said, about halfway through the night. "I just—I would've skipped altogether, you know? Been perfectly happy in the library or circling outside acting all Head Boyish. I'm glad I didn't do that."

George arrived, chipper as ever and decked out in pink. He wasn't particularly looking forward to going back to Hogwarts, but since all his friends were going he decided to tag along. Now that he was here, he was glad - it was nice to get all snazzy even if he didn't have someone special this Valentine's day.

Seeing as she had nothing better to do for the evening and everyone who'd commented on her journal seemed to think it was a good idea, Cho decided to head to Hogwarts. She pulled a pink dress out of her closet, pulled back her hair, and grabbed a shawl. She then exited her home and headed through Hogsmeade to the front gates of Hogwarts.

Once she arrived at the gates, Cho found herself standing there looking over the grounds, memories of the years floating back to her. True, it had only been a few months but those seemed to be a lifetime ago. Quickly, as it was a bit nippy, she closed the distance across the grounds and soon found herself tucked away inside the warm castle. The Great Hall before her like a beacon.

Cho entered the main room and couldn't help but smile at the grandeur of it all. Even though she had seen such displays throughout her school career she still found it to be breath taking.

Angie had no intention of going unnoticed. She arrived at the dance in a heavy cloak because Scottish winters were cold. Under her cloak, she wore a very short, very strapless, very seasonally inappropriate dress. She had an absolute ball dancing the night away with her friends, as promised.
