Nii was nowhere to be found when they arrived at the building.
"I'm going to go check the second floor," Sanzo called from the stairs. "Goku, come."
"Well," Hakkai said, more brightly than the situation warranted, "I suppose that means we're inspecting the lab."
"Great," Gojyo muttered. Just what he fucking needed after a five-hour car ride sitting next to the monkey. He really didn't want to know what the hell kind of experiments Nii kept in his lab.
There was a sound coming from the back of the lab. Gojyo found some sort of cage there, covered by a huge red blanket.
"Shit." He didn't want to know what was behind the curtain. But if it was something that had to be put out of its misery--
He grabbed the blanket and tore it off. Took a couple of steps back. Blinked.
Five puppies slept on the bottom of the cage, piled on top of one another, wearing Santa hats. There was a note hanging from the top if the cage on a piece of string. Dear Sanzo-Ikkou: Merry Christmas! I hope you enjoy these as much as I have. --Nii Jianyi
Goddamn Nii.
There was a sound of glass breaking. "Ah, how clumsy of me," Hakkai's voice drifted towards him.
Gojyo glanced back just in time to see one puppy's tail twitch. Then another puppy's paw moved. Then, as if sensing his presence, the puppy closest to Gojyo opened its eyes and looked mournfully up at him.
Fuck, not again. He was not going to pick up more strays.
"Oh, my," said Hakkai, coming up from behind him. "What shall we do? Jeep gets so territorial with other animals."
"We're not keeping them," Gojyo said. "...Are we?"
