Remus didn’t realize he was walking without Severus’ cane until he was standing on the other side of the Floo connection in the Ministry of Magic. His eyes widened comically and then they crinkled at the corners and he laughed, startling a young tour guide and her goblin charges. Then she recognized him….
“…Oh, my goodness! Do you know who that wizard is?” she said in a stage whisper. “That’s the famous werewolf, Remus Lupin.” Other heads began turning in the direction the tour guide was pointing. Her voice was puzzled as she continued. “They buried him after the Second Wizarding War. He…he died a hero of the Battle of Hogwarts….” the guide’s voice faded away uncertainly.
One of the goblins raised a camera and snapped Remus’ picture, almost blinding him. “Ooh, I think Filius taught him, Granddad. We’ll have to ask,” she said to the older goblin at her side.
“Looks good for a dead wolf. Wonder what he eats,” the older goblin replied.
“Mr. Lupin! Psst, Lupin!” Percy Weasley stood in an alcove flapping his arms, trying to attract Remus’ attention. “Come this way, sir. Hurry!”
Remus pushed his way through the crowd that had congregated around him, children patting his legs and some witches and wizards nodding as they mouthed their thanks. His ears were burning at that, and the typical slurs against him and his curse, but he finally made to Percy’s side and then behind a door and in a blessedly almost empty room lit with Christmas fairy lights.
“Are you here about…?” Percy looked around as if seeking spies, which made Remus bit his lip to keep from laughing. “…about him, sir?” Percy was practically vibrating with excitement. He widened his eyes and gestured to the side with his chin, toward a snoring wizard, pointy hat perched precariously over his eyes. The fairies flitted from their line to tweak the sleeper’s eyebrows, but nothing seemed to disturb the wizard’s sleep and several curled up in his beard for their own naps.
“Him?” Remus repeated dazedly. He took a breath. “Why don’t we sit down, Mr. Weasley, so we can talk more easily.” Remus strode toward a pair of chairs near the fireplace and sank down into the one on the left, turning so he could face Percy and still keep an eye on the door.
Barely taking a breath, Percy began speaking. “Potter, Harry began making enquiries after your miraculous revival. Experts in Memory Charms, Occlumency, Legilimency, and even Mesmerism looked at him and the memories he got from Professor Snape, searching for clues.” Percy took a breath and then the words tumbled from his lips even faster.
“He sent me a communiqué a few days ago, something about Ireland. I sent the investigators the information and just this morning, one of them reported something exciting.” Percy stopped suddenly and stared at Remus, gauging his reactions. His pale face was washed with the faint blues and greens of the fairy lights, making his sparkling eyes stand out.
“Ireland?” Remus asked in a whisper. His eyes fell on the sleeping wizard, watching the muted fairly lights shining on the man’s whiskers. “Why there? What information?” He felt himself beginning to vibrate with excitement as well. “Tell me everything you’ve found out, Percy. Everything!”
