Severus watched Lupin stalking across the snowy glade, skirting the edges just under the snowy tree limbs. He stood still and then cast a breathy Silencio on his robes and boots so he could follow in those hushed footsteps. The odor grew stronger as he neared the spot where Lupin had cut under the trees and back into the forest.
“Shh…” Remus whispered softly. He turned back toward a hollow between several massive oaks.
In the center was a wounded centaur. Severus blinked as a porlock scurried around a circle of mistletoe berries and pine needles. It was lighting red and white candles set at the cardinal directions as the centaur called out instructions.
Remus backed away, pulling Severus with him. He kept a finger to his lips until they were in the glade’s center. “What’s a porlock doing in the Forbidden Forest?” Severus asked in a hiss.
“I don’t know, but he’s going to need help. I think you’ll be best to deal with the centaur.” Remus grimaced. “I’m not one of their favorite beings since I’m a werewolf.”
Severus nodded, his mind racing over what he knew of centaur physiology—which wasn’t much. “We’ll need some things from Hogwarts…” he muttered.
“Just write it here.” Remus passed over a scrap of parchment and a Muggle pencil. “I’ll be as quick as I can.”
A muted moan and a muffled scream came from the direction of the hidden hollow. Severus looked at Remus and began scribbling.
