A/N: It’s pretty fluffy. Just warning you so you don’t choke on the ‘awww’.
Spock heard the helmsman sigh for the thirteenth time in twenty minutes and repressed a sigh of his own. Stepping down from the science station, he walked over to stand beside the only other person on the bridge. The Enterprise was docked at space station 13 and only a skeleton crew was required to maintain the ship’s readiness. Technically, a helmsman was not necessary while docked, but life in space was unpredictable and dangerous—it was never a good idea to leave such a vital post unmanned.
“You are dismissed, crewman.” The young man looked startled but as the words registered and comprehension dawned, a brilliant smile lit up his face. “Thank you, sir!” he practically shouted as he all but ran to the lift. Spock slid into the vacated seat and tapped into his science station to continue his research.
Most of the crew was at the Holiday party in Rec Room three, celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, and other various winter holidays. Spock did not observe any of the human holidays and Vulcan had none at this time, so he always volunteered to take the shift during the party. He was not very fond of parties anyway and would rather be on the bridge, working.
The hiss of the doors opening broke into his thoughts and he acknowledged the other reason he preferred this particular shift.
“Spock,” Jim’s voice was pleasantly husky as he slid into the captain’s chair. “Are you lonely yet?” The teasing never failed to thrill Spock.
Allowing a hint of the amusement he felt shine in his eyes, Spock swiveled around to face his friend and raised an eyebrow. “Lonely, Captain? That is an emotional response. As a Vulcan, I am incapable of—” Jim’s laughter cut him off and Spock couldn’t keep the corners of his mouth from turning up slightly.
Following the pattern of the last three years, Spock asked, “And you, Captain? Why have you left the festivities early?”
Jim smiled, the slow smile that made his eyes twinkle and Spock waited for the response he knew was coming. “Why, it’s not a party without you there, my friend.” Openly grinning now, Jim maintained eye contact. Spock held the gaze, feeling it in his very soul, as he always did when Jim spoke of his feelings for him.
Spock looked down and away, wishing he could express how much their friendship meant to him as easily as Jim did, but it was impossible. Finally he looked back up to his captain and friend, and said “Indeed, Jim, I much prefer to be here.” Left unspoken at the end of the sentence was the implied ‘with you’.
It was as close to the truth as Spock could get and he noticed Jim’s brief expression of surprise at his deviation from their playful banter. Then a gentle smile spread across Jim’s face and Spock knew he understood. Leaning forward, Jim almost whispered, “Me too.”
