Minerva stood in the doorway of the Great Hall watching the flood of happy, chattering students as they headed to their dorms. It was the night before Christmas break, and the feast had been superb. After dessert, a Christmas cracker had appeared on each student's plate, and many were still pulling them apart, playfully arguing over the prize inside. There were enough toys and treats for everyone of course, so no one was left empty handed.
An angry shout broke through the dull roar of conversation and Minerva turned to see a commotion surrounding Severus Snape. He was standing perfectly still, but vibrated with suppressed emotion. His fists were balled, his face turning an alarming shade of red. Severus was always quiet in class, almost sullen, though sharp-tongued if pushed. He could give as good as he got in a scrap - physical or magical - but for some reason, he seemed to be the target for most of the abuse in his year.
The source of his distress had melded into the crowd and he was alone by the time she got to him. He refused to name the students involved, not wanting to earn himself more enemies, Minerva thought. She knew he wasn't popular, even in his own house, and of course, her lions disdained all Slytherins. The likelihood of her finding out who had taken his Christmas cracker prize was slim. She watched him stomp off to the dungeons, an idea forming in her mind.
Severus woke up and rubbed his eyes, dreading the ride home, dreading going home at all. Sitting up with a sigh, he blinked uncomprehendingly at the gold and silver object on his night table. He stared in disbelief at the brightly wrapped tube with ribbon tied around the ends. Quickly stashing it in the top drawer, Severus wondered, with no small amount of awe, who could've - who would've - left it for him.
