Dec 05 Harry Potter - Severus, Hermione
Title: As Cold as Ice
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Hermione Granger, Lucius Malfoy, Mystery Person, and a Clue
Rating: PG 13
There were more suprising things than finding out Lucius Malfoy could be charming, not least that she was prepared to be charmed by him. He was doing his best to paint himself as a poor, lonely newly-made bachelor - despite all the newspaper evidence to the contrary - and she wondered whether he was playing the typical Slytherin trick of telling the truth in such a way as to make you think it a lie. It was Severus' favourite second favourite method of keeping people at arms' length, when vitriol failed.
The thestrals stopped, staring at something only they could see, shivering.
"I don't like this," Hermione said, taking out her wand.
Lucius didn't, as the boys would have done, told her off for having a rich imagination and wasted precious minutes arguing. He drew his wand, and cast a complex series of protection charms.
Just in time. There was a loud crack, and one of the large icicles hanging from the tree overhead crashed down on them, only to be deflected by Lucius' shielding charm.
"I think someone is trying to kill us," Hermione said.
"You, me, or both?" Lucius replied, still casting charms of protection (and very slightly Dark ones that would peel an attackers skin from them if they were stupid enough to get close, but which would still qualify as protective in front of the Wizengamot, honest, they would.)
"I can't think who would hate us both," she said. "But it feels like it was aimed at both of us."
Lucius nodded. Years of experience of consorting with dangerous wizards - and being a dangerous wizard - gave him an instinct for self-preservation. "I think you're right. Damn."
"What about Severus?" Hermione asked.
"You surely don't think that he'd be involved," Lucius protested. "I'd trust him with your life. With my life, even."
"Only as victim." Hermione flicked her wand, and sent her Patronus loping up to the castle with a message. "And I really think we should do something about that."
"I'd really hoped to put this type of thing behind me," Lucius said. "I was planning on a life of sybaritic luxury and debauchery."
"We can still do that afterwards," Hermione replied.
Lucius brightened. It was always possible that Severus would be grateful to be rescued, and gratitude could so easily turn into something more... active, given the right encouragement. He eyed his companion thoughtfully, and mentally crossed house elves off his list.
(I'll have to catch up with reviewing later as I'm off to work, and then straight to the pub for drinkies!)
