Title: Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes Special Christmas Crackers
Pairing: Ron/Hermione, others, and you can guess that I'll be splitting those two up by the end of it.
Rating: Pg13
There were times when being half a twin felt like being half a man, and there were times - times he didn't talk about - when Fred seemed to be still there. There were ideas that came from nowhere, and this driving voice that was the only thing that kept him from giving up.
The first Xmas after the War had been a quiet affair, but this second one should be happier. That was what his family thought, he knew, but there was something that was nagging at him. That voice, that was saying that things weren't quite right. He'd never been that good at arithmancy, so he wasn't quite sure what the Christmas crackers were going to do, but he knew that they were Right.
Hermione eyed the crackers suspiciously, but was too polite to say anything about the risk.
"Don't worry," George said in her ear. "You won't regret it, honestly."
They all pulled their crackers, one by one. Each person had a different animal that burst out of their cracker in a flash of light - Hermione had an otter, and Harry a stag, but not all of the fireworks matched the patronus of the person pulling the cracker - then dashed round the room before pressing a nose into the ear of their owner and vanishing. The crowd giggled, relieved that nothing worse had happened. They turned their crackers upside down, pulling out the paper hats and putting them on.
A scrap of paper fell out of Hermione's cracker.
"What's it say?" Ron asked.
"What is your ideal man?" Hermione said, and frowned.
"That's not a joke," Ron protested, and put a finger into his own cracker. "Mine says: What will make you happy?"
"Mine says, who do you think you are fooling?" Harry frowned. "What's this about, George?"
"I think that those are questions you need to answer," he replied, and there was something about the way he spoke that stopped people asking him more questions.
They tried to pretend that there was nothing wrong, and concentrate on the meal, but they kept turning back to the scraps of paper in their hands. They were questions worth answering.
Three days later, Ron travelled out to Egypt to spend a year in the desert sands working out what made him happy.
Three months later, Hermione worked out what her ideal man was, and he made her very happy, very frequently, and in all sorts of unusual places.
No one was surprised when Harry came out, and even less surprised when he took up with Draco, though Hermione often teased him about getting the second best Malfoy.
