Who: Carter and Katherine
Where: Their flat
When: Last Monday the whatever. Like I remember dates
What: Puppy for the win

Katherine hadn't given Carter's message too much thought. She was curious to be sure but she had more important things to do than worry about who Scout was. She was still in shock over getting the job, and she had far too much work to do that day; any and all thoughts of who she was supposed to meet that evening were pushed from her mind. And in all honesty, she had forgotten all about it until she was leaving. She wondered briefly if she needed to pick anything up in preparation, but Carter would have told her if he needed her to do anything, so she apparated directly home.

"Carter?" She called as she shrugged off her bag and pocketed her keys. "I'm home." Her curiosity returned to her then, and she wondered again who Scout was. She assumed it was just some friend of his or a friend of his family- musicians tended to have silly names like Scout, right?- but that didn't explain why he wouldn't tell her anything. If it was a friend, surely he could have told her that.

When Katherine had owled him to let him know she'd gotten the job, he'd been happy for her. Ecstatic, really. He knew how much she wanted it, and he knew that there wasn't a better person for the job. But at the same time, he knew that it was going to be incredibly hard to have her gone for that long. But he had wanted her to know that he was happy for her, and he had wanted to celebrate, so he'd gone out in order to pick up something special to surprise her with.

What he hadn't counted on was passing by a pet shop. He loved dogs, and though his parents had always promised him one, there had never been an opportunity to have one that was big enough to be the kind Carter had wanted. But the Australian Shepard whose face was pressed against the mirror was exactly the kind of dog Carter had wanted, and with Katherine leaving, he decided to be impulsive as well. So he'd forgotten all about dinner and her surprise, bringing the puppy with him as he went around to get the various puppy things he would need to raise it.

He'd spent the better part of the afternoon just lazing around on the couch, playing with the dog that he'd named Scout on a whim, waiting for Katherine to come home. It was an incredibly loyal, if not rambunctious, dog, and he'd let it take a nap on the bed while he took a shower.

When she called, he couldn't help but grin, rubbing the top of Scout's head with his palm as he yelled back through the open door. "Come meet Scout," he reminded her, laughing slightly as the dog nudged at him in response.

She followed the sound of his voice to the bedroom. She expected him to be with another person though why they'd be in the bedroom was beyond her. Imagine her surprise when she saw a puppy instead. For a moment she was speechless, and she just stared at him incredulously. "There's a puppy," she said finally, unable to do anything but point out the obvious. It was an especially adorable puppy, but that didn't change the fact that there was a dog in their bedroom.

He surprise began to wear off, and she smiled fondly at Carter. "He's adorable. Why's he here though? Are we watching him for someone?" That was what her mind first went to. It occurred to her that maybe it was theirs, but she had dismissed that thought quickly. She doubted that even Carter would impulsively buy a dog; that wasn't really the sort of thing one bought on a whim.

He smiled up at her, tugging the small bundle of fur into his lap as he patted the bed beside him. He wasn't exactly surprised at her shock; he had expected it, to some extent, though he had hoped she'd at least be a little pleased. "No," he replied gently, "he's ours. Come here, say hi."

Carter couldn't help but laugh as the dog squirmed, apparently trying to get to her and see who she was. "I don't even know anyone who has a dog, I don't think. Do you like him?"

"He's- Really? I don't-" She didn't really know what to say, and she just stood there blinking at him for a moment before she sat down beside him. "I do, really. But Carter, we don't know anything about dogs. We're not prepared at all. And we don't really have room for one, especially if he gets big." She didn't even know what kind it was.

But it was hard to sound stern when there was a puppy sitting there, and she couldn't help but grin at it. And it perhaps wasn't practical to keep a dog, but it was hard to say no when it was right there, being far cuter than anything had a right to be. "I can't believe you got us a puppy," she laughed, reaching over to pet his head. Except the more she thought about it, the less surprising it was. "I want to keep him but. Is this really a good idea?"

Carter just laughed, pushing the puppy towards her with a grin. "Hey. Come on. We're smart, we can research and figure it out. Buy a book or something. Puppies can't exactly be that hard. And, besides, it's a miniature shepard thing, it's not supposed to get that big." He didn't care. He knew that they could figure it out, and even if they couldn't, that was what friends were for. Cal and Rhys, and even Gavin if it came down to it, would help them figure it out.

He was happy that she seemed to like the dog. He had hoped that she would, but of course Katherine liked to throw wrenches into things. He wouldn't have been surprised if she had been crazy and not liked the dog, but he was glad that she did. "Yeah, of course. The lady at the store said it'd be fine so long as we walked him. And that won't be an issue, it'll be fun. He's cute, isn't he?"

"Well, yes, but you're supposed to do the research before you get the dog," she explained as she lifted the puppy to her lap. "And of course they're hard. It's not like taking care of a plant. Dogs are a lot of work." She had pets before, but her family had cats, so she really had no idea what you were supposed to do with a dog. She knew the basics, sure, but none of the specifics.

"And we'll need to train him," she reminded him. Though at least right now he wasn't on tour so Carter had time to take care of it during the day; this probably wouldn't be possible if they were both working all day. "He is, he's very cute." Her protests had been half-hearted. She was more practical than this, and she couldn't help but point out that this wouldn't be as simple and easy as he seemed to think. But it was very clear that the dog wasn't going anywhere. "Scout, is it. Did you come up with that?"

"We don't do things like you're supposed to, though," Carter pointed out. "What's the big deal? It's a dog. You take it out, you teach it not to eat your stuff, you play with it, you feed it. How hard could it really be?" He didn't think it would really be that big of a deal. There were tons of books out there on how to train a puppy, and he had picked up a few of them on his way home. And what he couldn't figure out from the book, the people at the vet or the pet store would surely be able to help. And besides, what could be so bad about such a cute dog?

"We can train him," he agreed. "I don't think that should be hard. He listens pretty well already." And it was true, Carter wasn't going to give up the puppy. He wasn't really a very stubborn person, but he definitely got attached to things and he had it in his mind that he wanted to keep the dog. He was almost like a small child; he'd do whatever it took to raise the dog right, and he'd make a hundred promises if it meant Katherine would agree to keep him. "Yeah, I did. I don't know why, it just seemed to fit. Do you like him, though?"
