Family time; various [ML, RL, NB, ?]
WHO: Meda Lestrange, Rabastan Lestrange the elder; briefly, Narcissa Black
WHERE: BLRD common room; dormitory corridors; grounds
WHEN: 26 December, 1001; morning
SUMMARY: Father/daughter bonding time, a brief cross-generation run-in, outdoor excursions and TBD.
RATING: TBD

Though her parents had arrived in the hours of Christmas Eve to Christmas Day, there hadn't been much actual sleep for Meda Lestrange or most of the others. Reunions had turned to necessary time for smaller groups of individuals to regroup, groupings that changed over the course of hours in their different combinations. Then had come the actual Christmas festivities, Meda watching her grandmothers with amusement as they scrambled without actually scrambling to adjust everything from meals to presents to accommodate the arrival of Rabastan and Narcissa Lestrange.

Eventually, however, sleep had caught up with even the live energy that was Meda, crashing with her head against the shoulder of the elder version of her father, moving in sleep to cling even more each time he tried to move. So it was there she slept.

Sunlight coming into the common room woke Meda from sleep. At first, there was the disorientation of where was she, as the fabric in from of her face definitely wasn't her pillow. It was only on blinking and looking up that she found she'd had her face pressed solidly into Rabastan's stomach. There was a pillow under her head, on his lap, and one under his head where it rested against the sofa, blankets tucked around both her and him.

He was here. He really was here, she hadn't dreamed it!

Shifting slightly, she got herself upright and moved so she was nearly nose to nose with him, grinning widely, but saying nothing as she waited for him to wake up with the impatience that would have been better suited to Christmas mornings of old.

Meda had never been a very patient girl when in came to something she wanted, but had her parents been there all these months, rather than far, far from her, she might have lasted longer in waiting for him to wake up. As it was, three minutes passing was all she could tolerate before she took action, first by bumping her nose against him. With the slight gestured didn't rouse him, she sighed, and then purposefully moved around, jostling him lightly. Still nothing.

She lifted a finger then and poked him on the end of his nose.

"Dad." Poke. "Dad." Poke. "Daddaddad." Poke poke poke.

Rabastan woke fairly quickly to the sensation of Meda's gentle pokes on the end of his nose (after all, she had woken him up many times before in a similar display of impatience.) He opened one eye and raised an eyebrow, giving her what only she would know was one of his maost amused looks.

"Yes, Meeeeda?" He drew the sound of her name out, barely suppressing his laughter. He felt so light around her, carefree...as though the last few hellish days of searching for his children were nothing more than a bad dream.

Meda could have shrieked with joy at the facial expressions alone. Her younger father was so like him, of course, and had instinctively mastered many of the things that had defined her relationship with him, but this was the face she had known all her life, from her very first memory. This was a man that couldn't be replaced, just as no one would have been able to replace her younger father. They were the same man, yet even Meda had to acknowledge the differences. Not that the differences mattered, not to her.

She shifted again so she could cling to him once more and squeezed him tightly, resting her chin on his chest.

"Hi."

Rabastan chuckled, the sound a soft, effortless rumble in his chest. He had missed her, the way she wore her heart on her sleeve for him to see, her exuberance, the way she so clearly loved their family. What had been days for him had evidentally been months for her, so he could hardly imagine how bad that had been.

"Hello." He somehow freed one hand to tap the tip of her nose with the same gentle playfulness she had used to poke at his nose. "I hope you're quite comfortable up there, Meda Lestrange." Teasingly, Rabastan put his arms around her shoulders and then rolled them to the side, so that she was close to falling off of the sofa. There was never really any danger of her falling, because he had a firm grip on her and because he didn't roll very far, he was just using an old, familiar game from when she was a child to try to keep that happy look firmly on her face where it belonged.

Pillows and blankets went bouncing and sliding away as Meda screeched comically, recognizing the game for what it was and all too thrilled to throw herself into it. It was home, home in this strange place that held so many wonderful things, yet had never been entirely home. Now? Now it could be.

"I was comfy, but now I'm going to fall!" she declared, which was clearly a lie, not only from the way he was holding on to her, but the way she was holding on to him. She struggled for good measure, grinning all the while like someone who had just been granted the greatest gift ever. In truth, she had been.

Rabastan tilted her closer and closer to the edge and then back again. In truth she was in no danger of falling, both because he had a strong hold on her and because Rabastan was determined that no harm would ever come to Meda while he was around...not even the minor discomfort that would likely come from a small fall from a sofa.

"I think you are going to fall." He declared, tilting her again toward the edge. "That's what happens to little blonde girls who worry their fathers for days and days." He returned them to their original position of laying on the sofa, and let out a small, thankful sigh. It all felt like a dream, her being safe and sound here hundreds of lifetimes in the past. "Don't do that again, Meme."

"For the hundredth time, Dad, this wasn't my fault, I didn't do it!" Meda exclaimed, poking at his sides with the forefingers of both hands before hugging him tightly again. He was Dad-shaped in a way that the younger Dad both was and wasn't and it was nice. Very nice.

"Hey!" Topics shifted quickly as she bounced upright next to him on the sofa. "Do you want to see Apollo and the other horses we've caught? Grandperé Lestrange says they are 'very fine animals' and younger you said they remind him of ones you had after you left Hogwarts and Apollo is mine, I named him after the last Apollo who was in the first Founder's era, and he looks just like him, and really, I think they're the same horse, so I guessed he wouldn't mind sharing the name."

Rabastan just listened to her, amusement clear on his face. He loved just listening to her talk, he always had. Everyone had told him that Meda's exuberant energy would fade as she grew into a young woman, but thus far it seemed to Rabastan that they were wrong, and for that he was thankful. The way she babbled on was endearing, and never failed to bring a smile to her father's face.

"Of course," he said, moving to stand. He offered her a hand to help her up, even now not liking the thought of her being too far away. "I hope that your Grandpere Lestrange and my younger self has made certain that these animals are tame enough to not be any danger to you..." Meda might have been raised near the Lestrange stables, but that didn't mean that Rabastan automatically trusted just any horse around her. He was still, at his heart, a cautious father.

Meda rolled her eyes at him as she jumped to her feet, the predictable response when he went all protective. "Dad, they're completely wild animals, of course they're not all tame, but it's fine, I've ridden all the ones we've had the longest and nothing's happened." Of course, she had also ridden the ones they hadn't had very long, but she wasn't about to admit that.

"Besides, they are no ponies here, as the Founder's really didn't want us wandering around the villages because we all haven't mastered the language yet. Well, Grandperé arrived knowing it, but I'm still using translation charms and bollocksing them all up like usual."

Her father's child even in that respect, being here with even the best witches and wizards of their respective times still hadn't given her her mother's finesse with Charms or a noteworthy skill with her level of education.

"We should get changed, I suppose," she said, nose wrinkling for a moment. He hadn't been far from her sight for very long since he arrived and the thought of parting long enough to clean up and change to riding clothes was far from appealing.

"Meda Cassiopeia Lestrange, you can't just say that they're wild animals in one breath and then calmly explain to me that you've ridden them in the next." Now, after finally having Meda back after the anxious days of searching for her, Rabastan was even more protective than normal. Though he had been known to mount a difficult horse in the past just to be the one to succeed in the matter, the though of his daughter doing the same thing made him anxious. What was his younger self thinking, letting her ride on wild animals?

He assured himself that were the situation unsafe he would refuse to let Meda ride until the animals were properly trained, and then nodded. Truth be told, he was curious about the horses. Still, he too was reluctant to let her go. He hugged her close, closing his eyes and again finding himself full of gratitude that he had found her again. Finally he managed to release her.

"You go change, Meda, and I'll go find something in Father's closet or the other Rabastan's that will work for the occasion as well. I'll meet you here when we're done."
