premise and guidelines.
[info]abundantideas is a community based on an idea by China Miéville:
"A sideways homage to Gaiman and to his incomparable Sandman, rather than stories set in the comic's universe, would be a collection of all these tales listed but not (yet) written, generated by Madoc's punishment. Each thrown-out line could be turned, by some suitable writer, into a story. It would be loving, respectful, hopefully intriguing and, if done right, not a little unsettling, given the grotesque nature of the crime that spawned these punitive inspirations."

The aim of the community, then, is to take Madoc's ideas and use them as prompts -- for fiction, for a short comic, for a piece of artwork, a photoshoot, a poem, anything. Our only limitations here are that you don't violate IJ's TOS and try not to post anything of obscene wordcounts (i.e. don't write chapter upon chapter upon chapter, folks). Use your discretion in your subject matter: if it's something you think will really offend people, feel free to make a post on the comm asking so, e.g. "My story about Prompt X involves rape/incest/murder/drug use, let me know if this is a problem!" Not that we think everyone and their mom is going to be pulling a Comedian, but just in case.

As far as rules go, they're pretty simple:
  • Don't be a dick. This goes without saying, and we really doubt any of you will, because you're all awesome or we wouldn't have asked you to join! But again, just in case.
  • This community is, by and large, a place to post your creative responses to Madoc's ideas. While we certainly don't discourage discussion, try to keep OOC commentary and spammy posts out of the comm. If you want to request a partner/team for a prompt or make a note about squicky content (as above) or something directly pertaining to the prompts, please do. But we do want this to be, primarily, a repository for fic/short stories/artwork/what have you.
  • No one can "claim" a prompt. That is, don't think just because Billy Bob posted a story about the were-goldfish prompt that you can't post your own take on it. We really want to encourage everyone taking these however they wish -- you can even do the same prompt twice, if you like. The options, they are endless.
  • When posting a story/piece of art/whatever, make sure to put it behind a cut, note which prompt you're responding to, and what type of piece it is. I.E., your post's subject might be the type of response ("SHORT STORY"/"PAINTING"/"DRABBLE"), and outside of the cut you would note which prompt ("Prompt: A sestina about silence, using the key words..."). If your response is anything higher than a PG-13 rating or something you wouldn't want people looking at at work, make sure to note that too.

Other than that, you're pretty much free to do as you wish! You don't need to post anywhere letting the comm know you're using a prompt; just go ahead and use it, and post when you're done! :D
