Characters: Christa Fall
Tagging: Oni "Shimmer" Sutherland
Location: Her apartment in New York City
Timeline: Present. After the meeting in the library with Deah (recap)
Description: Christa calls Oni with an intense need to talk to him.
Christa had been beyond disturbed by the encounter with Hack in the library. She had been left feeling oddly calm and disoriented by the silence, or relative silence, in her mind, the feeling of being empty that accompanied her all the way back to her apartment instead of the chaos that was usually there was unnerving. And it made finding her way back home more difficult than before as well; the lack of emotions bouncing around in the air and inside her mind meant she had several new bruises in places she hadn't before, legs and hips aching from banging into chairs and tables, doorhandles and her sofa.
She kept turning the moment over in her mind, trying to imagine herself arguing her point and pulling away, stopping those cold fingertips from touching her head, that cool touch invading her mind and then... stillness, silence. She had wanted to say that she didn't need help, but then it had happened, Hack had bypassed her mind so quickly and calmed everything down in a way that nothing else had ever been able to, silencing the rebellious emotions that usually lay dormant in her. Even now she knew she should be feeling something more extreme than she was. She knew that the realisation should frighten her, but for some reason the emotion wouldn't come to the forefront.
After the meeting, she had left with that subconscious command embedded deep withing her mind: meet up with Oni.
It had taken a long time for the emotions that usually flowed so freely through her to come to the surface, bubbling over the hold Hack had put on them, or whatever she had done and when they did, they hit Christa like a rockslide and she crumbled underneath them all.
Suddenly the world was loud again, people were moving and breathing, there was life and sounds and feelings all around her and her own spiralled out of her control, though it still wasn't as clear as it had been, like someone had put a filter over the world. A part of her was relieved that she was feeling properly again, the emptiness that Hack had created was almost gone, but at the same time, it left her feeling scared all over again, really scared as opposed to thinking she should be feeling scared.
She was lost and afraid which was the reason her brain had invented for the reason she picked up the phone and dialled the operator to get hold of Oni's number, the movement unlike something she should have done - she would have called her sister. The command overrode anything she would have done ordinarily. She tracked down the number of the centre and left a message because she couldn't get his home phone number. It had to do.
The phone rang out to the answer machine and she took a deep breath as she listened to the instructions and Oni's answer message before the beep clicked in and it started recording. With their being no immediate answer, she panicked a little, that urge to see him doubling and for a moment, she couldn't breathe. When she spoke, her voice was shaking a little and sounded as tearful as she was.
"O-Oni? It's Christa, we, uh, we met a while back... I don't know if you remember, I haven't heard from you for a while... but I- I'm scared, and I- I met someone in the library and she- she did something to my powers and everything felt wrong- and- please- can we meet up somewhere? Or something? I need help." She left her number, which was easily traceable to her address - the lease on the apartment finished in three days anyway and she had packed most of her stuff up, but she didn't know where she was going to go next. Once she had done that, she hung up and took a breath as whatever Hack had done to her emotions was fully lifted and everything hit her again, in a rush, allowing for her to have an A-grade emotional breakdown, broadcasting to everyone around her throughout the whole apartment building.
Gripping the handset tightly, Christa stumbled over to the couch and fell down onto it, sightless eyes sliding shut. Her tears fell hard and fast as she curled up, knees rising to her chest. She wrapped her arms around them and buried her face in her knees, sobs wracking her body. The backlog of emotions that had been hidden and repressed by Hack's touch overrode everything she had worked so hard to build up, walls breaking down even though she tried to keep it together, defenses crumbling underneath the strain they were being put under.
She put the phone down beside her and fisted the fingers of one hadn in her hair, tugging as if that would give her some kind of reprieve and the other fingers twisted in her jeans as she tried to ground herself, trying to pluck something useful out of the emotions flying through the air even though she couldn't determine which of them were hers and which ones belonged to the other people around her, it was just a blur, a blur that blinded her completely and totally to everything.
God, this was so screwed up.
