It was a school: word spread quickly. And by Saturday afternoon, even had Lily and Remus not announced their discovery in their journals, there was a good chance that Severus would probably have heard about it. Hearing about it, and doing it, however, were two different things. Severus knew that if he set his mind to it and played with it enough, he'd get it to work, but where was the fun in that? It was an excuse to talk to Lily about something other than classwork or assignments. And so it was that after finishing his pudding, he walked towards Gryffindor table where he could see Lily's red hair as she finished her meal. He ran his eyes up and down the table hoping that neither Potter nor Black would be anywhere nearby, and he was in luck. He approached the table and stepped up beside Lily. Lily had been confusing Severus recently. Or maybe it was better said that Severus found Lily confusing. They'd always been friends and he'd always wanted her to share everything with him and he'd always wanted to share everything with her, but recently he'd found himself annoyed when she spent time with other people. And this thing was no exception. It was clear she and Remus Lupin had spent time holed up in the library together to figure out this warding - however it worked. And the idea of Lily and Remus alone (even under the watchful eye of Madam Pince) made Severus feel uncomfortable in a way he'd not experienced before. He'd passed Lupin in the hall earlier today and had wanted to hex the boy, not because of anything Lupin had done, they'd barely acknowledged each other, but because of some urge he couldn't even begin to describe. He'd not given Remus Lupin much thought, other than he was a Gryffindor and he hung around Potter and Black, but Severus mostly spent time disliking Potter and Black without spending any thought at all about Lupin. But today he'd been considering Lupin, and the considerings had not been pleasant. Lily couldn't actually like the other boy, could she? But now he'd get the information about the ward from her, and surely she'd just been spending time with Lupin to figure out how to make things private. Right? "Hi, Lily," he gave her a hopeful grin. |
