The morning was bright and crisp as a flutter of morning owls scattered the skies. All of Hogwarts rose to the usual morning routine, though a slight chill on the air seemed to prick at more than one students' attention. Naturally, that would be something to do with the state of the main entrance, usually a grand splendor of etched marble and royal carvings. Usually the start of the day meant students of all ages sluggishly, while some marched with early bird feet, made their way to the Great Hall for what could be considered a very nurturing breakfast feast. Today was a frightfully cold exception. There covering the staircase, and the floor below, was a sheet of ice so thick that it was hard to even perceive a staircase was below it. As the sun glazed through the windows, the iridescent covering glistened and fogged the air, changing the season in that moment into winter. Not stairs but an icy slide rested at puzzled students’ feet, and a few lost their footing only to slide down and feel the cold against skin. Curiously there were two snowmen at either side of the slide, smiling wicked grins with sticky arms raised to those approaching, or sliding. However, it was clear that when certain students slid past their warm welcome, the Snowmen changed demeanors into snowball-filled frenzy and launched assault on the unlucky victim. Cold and wet balls of magical snow were the ammunition, and the targets soon became obvious. Hufflepuff girls giggled as they sled down unharmed, and two very loud Gryffindor boys somehow coming prepared with ice skates, skated down the slope with ease. But any boy or girl in a blue and gold design met a wet and sticky end. The chaos unfolded for ten minutes; sledding, skating, and Ravenclaws screeching in fright shattered the peaceful calm of morning. Soon Professors Flitwick and McGonagall were able to ascertain the situation and reduce the ice and snowmen into evaporated water that lingered like a fog as it disappeared from the floor. They could not do much for the soaking wet students of Ravenclaw house except for usher them back toward their dormitory for a change of clothes. Everyone else was able to enjoy their breakfast in peace. |
