WHO The Order of the Phoenix (any who want to/can attend)
WHAT Meeting
WHEN Monday night
WHERE Abandoned church outside of Appleby-in-Westmorland

The absence of Albus Dumbledore left a gaping whole in the structure of his Order of the Phoenix. Their leader was lost - removed from them behind incantations and stone in a prison. Unspoken leaders stepped forward - Alastor Moody, Minerva McGonagall, and Kingsley Shacklebolt - but none could replace Albus. The Order had been rocked to the core, and the passing of each day threatened them further. They had seen friends reduced to servants or, worse, murdered.

Communication had been a hurdle for the Order from the early days. Dumbledore had not trusted owls nor did he fancy something as poetic as a burning a brand upon one's arm. Instead, Dumbledore had enlisted the help of a dear friend to cultivate something more more...simply. Each Order member had a token, if you will. Dumbledore's, for instance, became his glasses. He happened to know that Minerva had selected a favored brooch in the shape of a leaf. All ordinary items that had been charmed by Albus himself to perform rather extraordinary magic. Albus need only envision what he needed from his Order - a meeting in a select location, for example - and the location would inscribe itself upon the associated tokens. It had not failed them in the year since they had adopted this method, and Alastor Moody rather counted on it working tonight. He drew in a breath and looked around the old church. His token - a pocket watch that was more for looks than for time - gave a bit of a shudder, and Alastor knew the message had gone.

It was after dusk. The boys had been especially difficult to put to bed tonight - the day had been gorgeous and most of it had thusly been spent playing out in the yard, chasing chickens and pretending to have epic Quiddtich matches on toy brooms, and the sunlight had seemed to linger forever. Usually Molly didn't need an extra hand to round everyone up, but tonight had been a different story... and so, rather than going through tedious mounds of paperwork for his job, Arthur had elected to spend his evening in his favorite cushy armchair, reading the Daily Prophet. The news wasn't ever particularly enjoyable these days, but it was better than writing up yet another report on underage students "accidentally" giving each other Jelly Legs.

He was deeply engrossed in an article extolling the virtues of the Marriage Act and announcing the newest crop of engagements when his wristwatch gave off a peculiar sort of chime. Arthur glanced down at it to read the location spelled out in the numbers on the face, quickly memorizing it before folding up his paper and setting it neatly on the side table next to his tea. He knew that Molly would have noticed the signs of the meeting, too; whether she was going to stay or tonight or check on the children before leaving, Arthur didn't know, but since they had previously discussed that Arthur needed to attend this next meeting, he didn't hesitate any longer before Disapparating.

The sensation always felt somewhat squinchy, and upon his arrival at the old church Arthur's first thought was that he very badly wanted to itch his nose. Doing so, he looked around. It was mostly empty except for a small gathering at the front, which Arthur walked over to join, wondering what they were here to discuss tonight.

Bed time for the Weasley's had come and gone more quickly that usual for some reason. Handing Ginny off to Bill, she gave her oldest the task of putting his little sister to bed. She would then have Charlie, Dora and Percy round up the twins while she put Ron down for the night. She would always have to help with her twins, but at least getting Charlie and Percy to help try and put them to bed wore them out a bit. Though, now that Dora was around to help Charlie and Percy with their nightly chores Molly didn't always have to help with Fred and George. There was something about the older girl that they respected that they didn't necessarily respect in their older brothers. Dora had a way with them that Molly admired and was truly grateful for.

But this evening, well this evening everyone was wound up so tightly that their nightly routine took longer than usual. It wasn't long before everyone was tucked away in their beds though, sleeping as sound as possible. While Arthur read the paper in his favorite chair, Molly washed the dishes from dinner that night, humming softly to herself. She was so focued on the task she was performing that she almost missed the faint chime the bracelet around her wrist gave off. Pulling her hand from the soapy water, she tried flicking off as much of the water as she could to see what was written on the flat, silver surface.

Pursing her lips together she looked over her shoulder, knowing Arthur had probably already left for the metting. Shaking her hands dry as much as possible, she used the towel she hung on her belt to continue drying off her hand as she went up the stairs to peek into the bedrooms over every child, making sure they were all asleep. Pulling her wand out, she whispered a protection charm on each of their doors before taking a deep breath and Disapparating just as her husband had done.

The end location had been an old abandoned church. Glancing around, she smiled at those familiar faces she saw until she found her husband. She crossed the empty floor to his side where she found his hand with hers, squeezing it tightly as she smiled up at him, silently letting him know the children were all alright while they were both away.

Fabian's eyes were burning. He had been going over old documents from the bank written with the tiny scrawl of a goblin. Most of it was in Gobbledegook, which wasn't helping the strain on his eyes. At first the vibration of the elaborate watch on his wrist didn't alert him as it should have, but after a moment's thought, he glanced down at it. The watch itself had been a gift from his parents on his seventeenth birthday, a wizarding custom. It was a bit dented in the back after he and Gideon had been foolishly goofing off in one of their first assignments in Egypt. Old pyramid curses were a lot more dangerous than they seemed after thousands of years.

The location of the meeting appeared on the watch's face and Fabian eagerly pushed back his chair. Wincing as he stood, he rolled up the old parchments and stowed them away in his briefcase. Gideon hadn't come back to the house yet, but he felt sure he would see his brother at the meeting at some point. Just as he was heading down the stairs, he remembered Maggie. They had developed a rather domestic habit of letting each other know if and when they would be back home again, just for safety purposes. Quickly searching the house for her, he found her on the sofa fast asleep, a book laying open on her very pregnant belly. He stopped for a moment and watched her before conjuring up a blank piece of parchment along with a quill and ink.

He scribbled a quick untidy note: Order meeting. G and I will be back late. Don't worry.

Leaving it for her on the table, Fabian stood and promptly left the room. Once outside, he Disapparated and found himself a moment later in front of an old abandoned church. The windows were lit with the dim glow of candles. In the darkness, he saw a few shadowed figures hurry in toward the door and followed them inside.

Lots of familiar faces surrounded him, but he sought out that of his older sister, only catching the telltale shade of her hair among the dense crowd. He wound his way through to her, nodding a hello here and there. Coming up behind her, he placed his hand on her back, so as not to startle her. "Hey, Molls," he said in a low voice, forcing a small smile to his lips. "Alright? How're the boys? And the little princess?"

There were hushed whispers running about the room, but Molly tried not to focus on them. There was so much dispair gonig on around the Wizarding World that she'd rather not hear about it right now. This moment was meant for seeing old friends she hadn't had the pleasure of playing house mother to yet. She smiled and waved to Lily from across the room before feeling a hand placed on her back lightly. Knowing it wasn't Arthur, she quickly glanced over her shoulder and smiled when she saw the familiar face of one of her littler brothers.

"Fabby," she said in returned greeting, releasing Arthur's hand so that she could wrap her arms around her brother. She felt for him most of all in this entire situation. She knew some great couples who had been forced to leave one another, but it was always different when it was one of your own. Smiling lightly at his question of the children she nodded lighly once before responding, her voice going to a low tone without her even realizing it.

"They're all wonderful. Bill's excited to start in at Hogwarts come August," she reported with an exaggerated roll of her eyes. It was all that her eldest seemed able to talk about. Hogwarts this and Hogwarts that. Though she honestly couldn't blame him. She was pretty sure she had been the same after she had gotten her acceptance owl, if not worse. She knew that Fabian and Gideon had both been even more obnoxious than she thought Bill could ever be. "And you? How're Maggie and Marly?" she asked, genuinely concerned for both women. She'd spoken to Maggie recently, but she hadn't had a chance to see Marley in quite some time. Longer than she liked really.

Seeing Molly sent a wave of relief through Fabian. So much about her made him feel safe again, especially in times such as these. He held on to her for a few more seconds than was absolutely necessary, making sure he was smiling when he pulled back and she was able to see his face. He extended his hand to Arthur and nodded a hello to his brother-in-law. Fabian was eager to hear about the children. He felt terrible that he hadn't been by the Burrow to spend more time with them, but with everything going on, it was difficult to spare a free afternoon.

"I can't believe he's of age, honestly," he replied to the news of Bill heading to Hogwarts in a few weeks' time. "I remember when the little bugger was born. Changed his diapers. It's just not right."

The mention of Marly and Maggie nudged him back to the present. "They're doing okay, considering. Marly's getting big. I think it's going to be any day now, actually." Fabian straightened up and ran a hand through his hair. "It's been crazy, Molls. I thought it'd be easier, to be honest." The days had started to blur together for Fabian awhile ago. The routine was beginning to wear on him and the waiting was worse. He could feel it in the way his sister had hugged him - he must not look as put together as he was trying to appear. It was too easy avoiding mirrors these days.

The question was on the tip of his tongue, but he bit it back. Asking Molly to help with Marly seemed to be selfish and inconsiderate with all that was going on, both with the Order and in the Weasley home. Instead, Fabian took the opportunity to take in the room and the people milling about. He caught sight of Moody eyeing them all with a rather severe look on his face.

"Gideon better get here soon. Moody'll chew him out if he shows up mid-lecture."

Molly smiled lightly at the memory of her eldest son at an age when he still wore diapers. "You're telling me. I haven't stopped changing diapers for the past ten years!" she said, shaking her head lightly. It'd been ten years ago, but it only seemed like yesterday. It was amazing to her how quickly time flew by without even realizing it. It was that fact, that so much time could pass without even realizing it, that gave Molly most of her hope that things would turn out for the better for everyone before anyone even realized it. But then again, Molly was the ever optimist when it came to things like this. She wasn't entirely sure how she did it. How she was able to stay so positive in such dark times, but she credited it a lot to her children and Arthur. Without a single one of them she wouldn't be able to do the things she did.

But at the mention of Marly's condition, Molly suddenly got very excited. She loved children, obviously or she would have killed the ones she had by now, and the thought that she was finally going to be an aunt got her all kinds of ecstatic. At the thought that things would be easier, she shook her head lightly. "Nothing is ever as easy as we think it will be, brother. I'll be seeking Marlene out here soon enough but if you talk to her before I do be sure to tell her that if she needs any help, and I mean any help, that she is to come to me," she said with a matter-of-fact nod. She didn't care that she had seven -- no eight with Dora -- children under her care. She'd been doing this for eleven years already, if she didn't have it down by now she probably wasn't going to ever have it down. She could afford to help her sister-in-law (despite what the Ministry said she'd always consider Marlene just that).

But at her brother's concern for his twin, Molly turned to catch Moody's gaze as well, giving him a bright smile and a small wave. She was met with an awkward scowl, something she knew meant to be a friendly acknowledgement that just didn't suite Moody the best. She knew he meant well, he just wasn't the best with these kinds of things. Bringing her attention back to her brother she nodded once. "I'm sure he'll be along soon enough and if not a good tongue lashing might do him some good," she told him, amending the last bit of her sentence in as an after thought, smirking slightly. She knew that if you could count on her brothers for one thing, it was to try and get away with breaking the rules as much as possible.

Lily's correspondence with Severus Snape had left her feeling anxious and a little panicked. She had known that she and Harry were not safe, that they were not wanted, but to learn that she had been named and someone was coming for her, specifically, had knocked the wind out of her. She had not wasted any time in moving herself and Harry from the little muggle village where they were currently staying. The people there had been friendly, though Lily had kept them at arm's distance for precaution. No, at the present time, Lily and Harry were in-route to Ordsall Hall. She figured it was a good place to hide as any - muggles thought the place was haunted and tended to leave it alone, and Death Eaters could find her anywhere anyways. At least they would have to look carefully.

Lily had just gotten Harry to sleep when she felt a curious tug on her necklace. The necklace itself had been a Christmas gift from James back when they were at Hogwarts, but tonight its importance lie less in sentimental value and more in Order business. She hastily read the address that presented itself on the back of locket and looked over at Harry's tiny body. The pull between allowing her sleeping boy to continue snoring and the desire to know what was going on with Order (and to see James) was heavy. She knew it would be foolish to wake Harry and take him with her to the meeting, so with a bit of a sigh, Lily curled up next to Harry and resigned herself to missing this one.

Alastor was tired - he ran a dirty hand over his face and watched in mute patience as a couple of the Order members assembled. Their numbers were dwindling from death, fear, and lack of means. If they wanted to survive - and they did - then they must become aggressors. The days of hiding, watching, and resigning were over. They must stand against this injustice, this oppression. If they did not, who would?

"I guess the first order of business is the need for safe houses," Alastor announced gruffly. "As you see, plenty of us aren't here tonight 'cause they're out in the middle of nowhere pretending not to exist. I know Arthur and Molly have been offerin' up their home - and I also know this is appreciated. The Longbottoms, too. Are there others who would be willing to hide your friends? No one will judge you if you say no, of course. The risk is high to your family when you make such a promise. But we need to get that ball rollin' before we read someone elses name in the Prophet. It needs to be organized. We need to know who is where and when."

"We also need to resist. I would say overthrow, but such a word is superfluous at this point. It's no secret we don't have the numbers or the ability to overthrow and revolutionize at this point. But resist - we can always do that. Maybe one day, we will have the numbers. We need people back in the government - in the papers, too. We need to start hitting Voldemort where it hurts. He has control because he has the numbers and fear on his side. We have to show that we are not afraid. And we have to take care of those numbers a bit."

Personally, Alastor had no qualms about evening out the numbers, and he doubted most of the people around him had a problem with it either. Too long they had watched as innocent people were hunted and killed like a sport. In Alastor's incensed opinion, it was time to give the Death Eaters a taste of their own medicine. Albus had warned against fighting fire with fire, but there was no longer a way around it.

James stared around at the busy pub, not really seeing or hearing anyone as he drummed his fingers on the tabletop. He had a full draft sitting in front of him, and it had been sweating for half an hour, a little pool of water gathering around the bottom of the glass. His head buzzed with thoughts--ideas, more specifically, and none of them bright ones.

He needed to get back into contact with Sirius. His house was as safe a location as he could think of to meet up with Lily and Harry--the least risky, at least. It was a pureblood home and probably wasn't being watched by the Ministry. The only problem was, it had been ages since he'd been able to talk to Sirius and even longer since he had spoken to Lily. He didn't know anything--where she was, what she was doing, whether she was hurt or--

A soft chime coming from inside his jeans pocket interrupted his train of thought, and James jammed his hand into it quickly, pulling out the small, golden Snitch he'd once carried around at Hogwarts. Finally, there was another Order meeting. His eyes scanned the location written on the smooth surface of the little ball, and an instant later he had Disapparated where he sat, leaving behind a full mug of beer and no bill.

The abandoned church where they were meeting was quiet, and James hurried inside. He could hear Moody's voice, echoing off the old stone walls, and tried to slip in as quietly as he could. He looked over the tiny crowd: Molly and Arthur, and that was it. His heart sank; Lily wasn't there. An uncomfortable twisting started in his stomach, as he tried to imagine what might have happened to her to prevent her from coming.

Arthur listened quietly to Alastor's words. The situation really was looking quite dire for the Order; so many of their number were now considered of a lesser class, or worse, being actively persecuted. It couldn't be easy for most to get away for a moment for a meeting. He squeezed Molly's hand as Alastor mentioned the danger to the families of those volunteering in the safehouse program - with as much as the safety of the children was on his mind, he could only imagine what she went through during the day, chatting and playing as if there were nothing wrong. Children couldn't know just how dangerous it was. And it would get moreso, he was sure, now that Moody was suggesting that the Order retaliate.

The thought was terrifying. He wanted to ask how they were meant to retaliate with such small numbers, but then from of the corner of his eye, Arthur spotted James Potter, standing alone and looking as though he was about ready to curl into a ball and disappear from sadness. He turned to Molly and whispered "I'll be back in a mo', love," giving her a tiny kiss just behind her ear before cutting through the tiny crowd toward James.

Arthur greeted James with a nod and as much of a smile as he could manage - which wasn't a lot. "I heard from Lily the other day," he said, not seeing much point in idle greetings. "She and Harry are all right. They might come to stay with us for a few days soon. You're always welcome, too."

James saw Arthur approaching him and opened his mouth to mutter a hello, but Arthur beat him to it. The moment the word Lily escaped his mouth, it was like James snapped out of a daze. The twisting in his stomach was replaced with hopeful butterflies.

"You did? Merlin...I'm glad to hear it, it's been so long since I've heard anything...where are they?" He knew it was likely that Lily hadn't revealed her location to Arthur in case it was intercepted, but he couldn't help asking. If anyone could tell him where Lily was he would do anything to get to her, consequences be damned.

The butterflies multiplied when he mentioned that Lily and Harry might be coming to stay with them. "Yeah...yes, thank you, yes, please let me know if they come to stay with you. It's been six months since I've seen her and I dunno if she knows about this arranged marriage thing..." A note of bitterness entered his voice as he remembered the contract that had been drawn up between him and someone named Estelle Davies. He didn't know her, or even when the marriage was going to take place, but it made him sick to think about it.

"I just want to see her again." At this point, he would be grateful for even a glance across a crowded street.

"She said they had been laying low in a Muggle town, but I don't believe she's there any longer," Arthur replied. "It's dangerous to reveal too much, I'd think. There's been -" He stopped for a moment, trying to find the words to communicate correctly without worrying James more than he likely already would be. "At work there's been talk lately, about how enforcement has been lax. It could be nothing, it could be that there's a department head angry somewhere about some misfired Charm, but judging by the people..." Arthur trailed off, shaking his head. "I don't blame Lily for not saying where she is right now, even to someone safe."

Listening to James talking about the 'marriage thing', Arthur felt a pang in his chest. He seemed absolutely distraught about it. In an attempt at reassurance, he put a friendly hand on James' shoulder. "Even if she knows, James, we all know who it is you're really married to. It's a horrid situation, but we all know how you feel for Lily, and I'm sure she knows it too." He didn't imagine his words would be too much by the way of comfort, but it was impossible for Arthur to not at least try and offer some encouragement. "I promise, the moment I know when and if she and Harry will be visiting, I'll owl you straight away. So keep on the lookout for letters talking about our cabbages, all right?"

Arthur looked back over at the other members of the Order, standing near Moody. He caught Molly's eye and gave her the warmest smile he could muster. "Come on, James, let's see just how Alastor plans for us to get even about all of this." He hoped his voice sounded more confident than he actually felt.

James swallowed hard. If the Ministry was cracking down even more on these ridiculous new laws, Lily and Harry would have to be extremely careful. He wanted desperately to see them, but he didn't want them risking their lives in order to do so. "No, you're right. It's better that no one knows where she is. And here I was thinking those bastards couldn't possibly be any worse." He shook his head, fists curling slightly at his sides.

Arthur's hand found his shoulder and the lump in James' throat became worse. He swallowed again. "I know, but the last time I talked with her, she seemed a bit distant. I have no fucking clue what's going on, I just hope there isn't something she's not telling me." He paused, letting Arthur go on, and wondering if he looked as bad as he felt. He needed to see Sirius, or someone; he was tired of feeling like this.

"I'll be watching." He wrinkled his brow at the bit about the cabbages. "You sound a bit mad sometimes, you know that?" His mouth quirked up in the suggestion of a smile.

James nodded, and turned back to face Moody. Maybe there would be good news tonight. Or an assignment. If he could get his mind focused back on the fight, maybe it wouldn't be so hard to stop thinking about Lily.

It was night time, which meant that she could come out of hiding thanks to the cover of darkness. She was starving and the berries and nuts just were not doing it. Dorcas decided she was going to try to find a pond where she catch some fish to eat. If that did not work there was always the small rats and mice, if she got desperate enough. Dorcas was hiking through the forest, picking berries, mushrooms and any edible flowers she could find, storing them away for later use.

Dorcas had thought she spotted a large area of water a few hundred yards away. She could see the moon reflecting off the surface of the water as she neared it. As she was making her way toward it, she felt a tug at her cigarette tin she had in her pocket. She knew exactly what that meant. That meant that the Order was calling a meeting.

"Lumos", She whispered as she shined her wand down at the tin, scanning what was written on it. She then took no time at all before she disapparated and reappeared near an abandoned church. She hoped that someone had some real food with them, because she was missing fish for this meeting.

"Look, I'm not tellin' you it's gonna be easy. It's not. It's gonna be rough, and it's gonna be gritty. But the fact of the matter is that we don't have another option." Alastor rubbed his jaw and shook his head. "We've got to start recruiting. We need to bolster our numbers again. Relatives, friends...people you can trust. People who are bloody pissed off at what Voldemort's done. People who have had their husbands and wives and children taken from them. Those people are the people we need to be talkin' to. Those people have lost something, which means they have something to fight for. The Death Eaters...their hearts are in this for money and fame. You take away that money and the fame, and I promise the lot of you that they'll back down one by one. I figure if each of us can get at one or two people, that's a start."

Emmeline stayed decidedly quiet while lofty plans were concocted. There was an obvious stream of logic to it all. Yes, they would need more people if they were to effectively take down their opposition. Yes, people were more likely to be recruited if they were angry. She wasn't entirely convinced that what the Order needed more of was angry people but she realised she was in the minority of people who weren't entirely angry over one thing or another. Anger had never been an emotion that made sense to her so she didn't care to engage in it. It led to violence and shoddy plans that couldn't be resurrected.

The tail end of his proposition made much more sense to her. Fame and money were easier to manipulate than life and death. She saw a path in this idea which she could follow and she nodded subtly at his suggestion to make being a Death Eater simply less profitable, less inviting. How though? She thought in terms of her own connections, the Death Eaters she knew. They weren't entirely awful people. Just concerned with image. A subtle enough suggestion, the right flirtation, she could see how that might change a mind or two. Not into desertion, of course, but to see an alternative route. Best way to do that? Wives. Fascinatingly. "Would it be outlandish to propose that those of us who have been married off or betrothed make an effort to actually create a connection with our intendeds--they're either Death Eaters or related to Death Eaters. An extension of friendship can command surprisingly loyalty at times of need. It's not revolution, but it's a beginning."

Punctuality, unfortunately, was not with Remus on this evening. He'd been alerted to the location of the meeting just as the rest of the Order had, but conflicting thoughts stalled him for several long moments. The leather strap of the wristwatch was worn with age and use and the face of the watch held faint scratches from various mishaps and antics with the Marauders back during school, but it was sturdy nonetheless and served its purpose well. Even after it had shuddered to alert him to the message and he'd committed the location to memory, indecision stilled him. He knew it wasn't entirely prudent to go out when he was essentially a wanted man, but in the end, he was restless and he’d grown tired of hearing news secondhand while he was hiding out. Perhaps years of gallivanting about with the other Marauders had added a streak of boldness to the normally reserved young man. Pausing again only to pull on a coat, he Disapparated to the set location.

He noted the sound of muffled voices as he approached and slipped in to join the meeting as unobtrusively as possible. Remus still looked rather peaky after the most recent full moon, with dark circles resting heavily beneath his brown eyes and a faint frown that sharpened the angles of his slim face; nonetheless, he still guessed he had fared better than those who were hiding in less favourable conditions. He tucked himself away in an empty seat and listened in to catch up with what was being discussed. His eyes flickered between Moody and Emmeline as they discussed the issues that lay before them. "I think she has a point," he interjected, finally piping up. "I couldn't agree more with recruiting more members, but the Marriage Law is an assertion of their power. They think it makes everyone play by their rules, on their terms, at least in that regard. It's a way to strike back, in a sense, using their own system. It also carries the possibility of demoralising them later on, should they actually come to trust their spouse. That way we're not only bolstering our own numbers, but calling some of theirs into question. It's a unique opportunity that those of us in hiding can't use against them."

Sirius sauntered in, late per usual, as he repockted the pocketwatch heirloom he'd used for this bloody charm of Dumbledore's. Ironic, really, that something like that was used for the Order. He liked irony.

Clapping Remus, then James on the back, he flopped down in a seat and put his boots up. His eyes were a bit red, the circles under his eyes darker than usual, and his fingers twitched as if he were mentally holding onto something quite small.

"Ought to go for the women," he said. "Some of the men will care, but the women more so about institutionalised rape, I reckon. The ones who haven't fallen pregnant," he added. "Ones who have will feel a duty to family and home. Some of the pureblooded wizards not so far up the ladder too, ones who might've been seeing Muggleborns or half-bloods beforehand. Have to be selective about the process. Can't just go inviting everyone who thinks badly of this whole Marriage Law farce. That's a good three quarters of the population, and most of them would rather close their eyes and think of England than risk imprisonment or worse. Got to find the ones who lost something precious."

His gaze flickered over to James. Poor man, but anytime he wanted a go with Lily, Sirius' house was open. Warded as it was, with his so-called wife sworn to secrecy, it was safe enough.
