Too. Many. Monsters.
They were surrounded, trapped inside enemy lines. The air buzzed with ancient magic. Skeletor, no doubt, though Adora had yet to catch sight of the evil bone head. She'd been too busy holding off Hordak and his evil Horde.
They'd fought their way into the clear once, but been surrounded again so quickly that one word screamed in her mind: TRAITOR. There must be a traitor in their midst. She couldn't worry about that now. Have. To. Get. Free.
A massive sword swung down in an arc between her and three monsters, conveniently severing them at the waist. The body sections dropped to the ground screaming and writhing, diverted their comrades long enough for Adam to pull her free of the fray.
"You ready to end this battle, Sis?"
"Adam." She resisted the urge to hug him, allowed him to lead her along a path she figured he must have plotted ahead of time. He was so sure, so confident, as he led her here and there, through the clash of swords and flash of magic.
"Hang tight, Adora. We're almost there."
Tears burned her eyes. She was tired of fighting, tired of watching her friends die, tired of sneaking away to become someone else.
We are young, heartache to heartache we stand. No promises, no demands... We are strong, no one can tell us we're wrong. Searchin' our hearts for so long, both of us knowing...
How did Adam do it? How did he remain so confident, so strong? How had he done it for so long?
They broke free of the battle so suddenly that the clear beauty of the clearing took her breath away. So close to destruction and yet so untouched. And, yet, the buzz of magic that tainted the battlefield filled the air here, too.
"Let's go kick some evil ass," she growled, thrusting her magic sword heavenward. "For the honor of Grayskull."
Adam followed suit, raising his sword above his head. "For the honor of..." He'd scarcely gotten the word, "Grayskull," out of his mouth when his eyes widened. "It's a trap."
By the time they woke, the battle sounded distant, and Adora feared that whatever trap they'd tripped might have been the rebel's undoing. Still, they'd fight, they'd go down with their brethren if they couldn't prevail.
"She-Ra." Strange, but He-Man's voice sounded high-pitched.
Picking herself up off the ground, she found her movements slower, more deliberate. When her eyes locked with her brother's, though, her heart leapt into her throat.
"He-Man?" Her own voice, deep, sounded foreign to her ears. Fear followed realization. "Adam, how? What happened?"
"One of Skeletor's evil plans, no doubt." Though he sounded calmer, more rational, she couldn't help but notice the way his eyes kept darting down across her body...which he now inhabited...the way he swung his sword--her sword--experimentally.
"We're still who we are," he pointed out, "even though our bodies might be different now."
He was right, of course, and she couldn't help but wonder if he'd been through this kind of thing before. "Do you think the Sorceress..."
"Battle first," he reminded her. "Sorceress..."
Flexing newfound muscles, she growled, "Let's go kick some evil ass, shall we?"
Adam smiled back at her and She-Ra realized they were still a team. No matter whose body she inhabited, she would always fight for what was right.
Offering her his arm, he said, "I thought you'd never ask."
