p. 6, very first game
Inafune: I was assigned to Rockman, in charge of character design, in the days when I didn’t know anything about making games. Everything was strange in a strange world to me -- do I do this, do I do that? It was great fun, but very hectic. The man who originally planned the project, my mentor, had started as a designer, and he made the dot picture [T.N.: I’m pretty sure this is “sprite”] for Rockman, and prototypes of Roll and Dr. Light. I turned them into working illustrations, and touched up the designs, and such.

[T.N.: I’m disappointed he doesn’t give the name of his mentor, because that would be the person with the very first concept of Rockman. Maybe it’s such a V.I.P. at Capcom Inafune assumes the Japanese fans already know who he means? Or maybe it’s someone who’s left the company, so they don’t like to talk about him? Inafune refers to him as “Projectman,” like a Rockman character.^^]

p. 89, about Super Adventure Rockman
Inafune: Honestly, I have to apologize to the users for this. There was a period when the company cheapened Rockman, and I think this is the worst game of the lot. While it was in production, my predecessor quit, and suddenly it was passed on to me, but by then it was too far along to make major changes.

It’s only right that a game meant for children should make it a policy to avoid killing as much as possible, but this game has things like military helicopters going down and the people dying. If it were up to me, I absolutely would have followed up with them escaping by parachute. What’s more, Roll dies, and even the Earth gets destroyed. I said, “How far are you going?!”

Now, I would never let them do such a thing. Because not only is it a betrayal of the users to confuse “meant for children” with “taking advantage of children,” it also amounts to betraying all the creators who have been involved with the series.

Hideki: They told me “There’s no package illustration!” and suddenly I had to draw it. I remember wondering what sort of story it could be while I was drawing. …I’m sorry for not drawing Rush's feet, there wasn’t enough time at all, and I figured they’d probably get cut out of the picture anyway(laughs).

p. 161, some X5 illustrations
Matsuji Suetsugu: What I think has been done really well since the first days of the X series is the relationship between X and Zero. This is just my own way of looking at it, but X will lose in the beginning, then gradually develop until he wins in the end. His condition parallels the player. On the other hand, because Zero knows X’s strengths, even a B class and a Special A have mutual respect. When I think about it while I’m drawing, I can really identify with them. Late at night, after checking that no one was around, I would get carried away and cry “You guys are so cool!!” while I was drawing.

Edited for corrections. Most of the contributors write their names in kana somewhere in the book, but in this case I had to guess which possible reading of 末次. I picked the simpler one, so of course it's wrong.^^;

Also, I've been told
企画マン is an actual business term nowadays, for director or project manager. So Inafune wasn't trying to give him a Rockman-type name. I just saw the term for the first time here, in this context, with the -man suffix…

I should have followed my own suggestion and not posted until after the 15th!
