The day was perfect; the sun was out shining and clouds were shifting around in the sky. Birds, seagulls mainly, flew around and picked bread crumbs from the street. It was the perfect time to have a first date and that’s what Gus and Casper were having.
Technically it wasn’t their first date, but it was the first time they didn’t have to hide the fact that they were a couple to the world. It didn’t seem possible that they could out like this in public, holding hands the way that they were with everyone being able to see.
Casper was all smiles as he gripped onto Gus’s hand tighter and yanked him towards a small coffee shop. Gus was trying to catch his breath when they entered the shop and Casper had finally stopped running; he was starting to get too old for this and wondered how Casper, who was only two years younger then him, had so much energy to spare.
“Come on lets go order some coffee,” Casper said in a smile and walked up to the cashier with his grin still on his face. Gus shook his head and walked over to him.
Casper stared at all the different kinds of drinks and his head was starting to spin at all the different flavors. The cashier, a pasty faced teenager with freckles in random places all over his face, was waiting patiently behind the desk.
Gus was getting exasperated at how long it was taking Gus to order a simple cup of coffee, though he could blame him with all the wacky names plastered all over.
“Here let me get it; just two small coffee’s please,” Gus said and the cashier nodded, thumbing in the price.
“That’ll be six dollars and twelve cents.” Gus stared at the boy in surprise.
“That much for two coffees? Oh well,” Gus said, trying to shrug it off, but it was still such a shock to him; they could have gotten two small coffees for two dollars at home.
Gus reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a thick black leather wallet and pulled out the six dollars and twelve cents. The cashier took the money into his small hands with a small trace of humility and put the money into the register.
They soon got their coffee and sat at a small table close to the window. Casper was immediately looking out the window and into the street when they were seated.
“Isn’t it beautiful out?” Casper asked, giving a smile dramatic sigh. Gus shook his head and was soon gazing out along with Casper.
“It is nice outside,” Gus agreed. Casper took a drink of his coffee as he continued to look outside as cars rushed past and kids played around on the sidewalk.
“I’m glad that our first date could be sunny, I was worried it would be raining out,” Casper said and sighed before he took another sip from the cup.
“Casper you got to stop taking everything as a sign for our relationship. If it was raining outside we could’ve just stayed inside and watched a couple of movies instead,” Gus said as he shook his head. Casper turned towards Gus to respond and was surprised when Gus was staring back at him.
“I try not to, it’s just that I wanted to have a public date, not be holed up inside watching movies all day,” Casper said in a squeaky voice.
Gus finished off his coffee and threw it away in the trash can next to their table. He was then standing up and holding his hand out to Casper.
“Come on then lets go sight seeing. This is our only vacation for a few months now so we should take advantage of the situation.”
Casper looked at the offered hand and took it with a smile on his face. He continued to drink the coffee as they walked outside of the Starbucks and into the public. They continued to hold hands as they went out sight seeing.
