He had been hopeful that the book would not come up again. It had been a few days, but, unfortunately, it seemed that parties that he was loathe to think of at the moment had decided he needed this information vitally.
Suffice to say, he did not agree.
In fact, given option, he would have nothing to do with the material in that annoying volume, and that would be that. He was not a creature ruled by a portion of his anatomy used for even more unsanitary things than what that book was for. Unfortunately, it seemed that -someone- was not taking his hint, or in this case his blatant statement, that he did not need to know any further about these things.
None of that meant that he planned on leaving the book untouched on his living-room table.
Scowling, he turned and hit the various locks on his door, then strode over and collected the volume, looking it over to make sure that it was new before he went any farther. Once assured that it was, he hadn't had many doubts but one could never be too careful, he moved to the chair near the barest wall of his room and turned on the light in that corner.
Outwardly, the book looked plain. In fact, it looked positively harmless, uninteresting. It looked like any number of random medical texts he'd seen in the labs over the years.
Unfortunately, opening the cover quickly ruined the illusion, or would have had the name not already done so. There weren't pictures, yet, but the introduction was enough that he grimaced just the same.
Still, he wouldn't be left alone if he didn't at least page through the fool thing, and knowing the bothersome fool of a scientist who caused this thing to be in his rooms, he would be asked.
Feeling his frown grow a bit more as he realized the thoroughness of the volume, he resigned himself to a long evening. At least he had little enough else to do.
He wasn't at all certain if he should feel traumatized, disgusted, or fascinated that the human race had yet to go extinct.
Or, perhaps, he was taking this out of context, after all, a good half of the volume had little enough to do with actual -reproduction- and more to do with the exercise thereof. And the variety of methods used to carry out the execution thereof. As well as many items that could be integrated into the matter.
Only one of said items in the book really struck him as particularly thought inducing. Condoms. After all, it kept the mess contained, and kept foul germs away from areas that were hard enough to keep properly clean as it stood.
Just the same, did anyone even really need half those things? They were designated as toys in a few spots, tools in others, and he didn't think it really bore serious thought. It was disturbing enough in passing.
Why make sex more complicated? Yes, the technical portions made it clear why people would at all consider it, but was a physical reaction to the positive really worth so much hassle? The risk seemed utterly absurd, overrated. There were more than a few sicknesses mentioned in one section after all. Rashes, festering, physically debilitating things all.
All that for a brief pleasurable sensation with no real benefit if one wasn't with a female. After all, you could not get one of your own gender impregnated, so that defeated the one useful thing that could come of the union.
Frowning darkly at the back cover of the book, he distanced himself from his distaste and decided to look at the matter with another perspective. Humans were social creatures. It was something he knew, without argument, to be true. Were they not, cities would not exist, and family units would disperse when breeding times were not in effect. It was the way of solitary animals. Thus, humans were not solitary animals.
Nodding slightly, he moved along to his next point on the line. Socialization. He knew he was ill socialized. Even if he'd never been told this, he could easily observe the fact that he was not near so in search of physical contact of most, if not all of the people he observed on a day to day basis. They were subtle cues, not all involving any sort of actual contact, but there were often distances that easily pointed to friendships between certain people, deeper affections between others, and even, at times, a kind of touch pointed itself to him as one belonging to a pair of people who hated each other, but for some reason did not avoid one another.
He himself was not comfortable sharing in these displays outside a select few people who he had deemed acceptable company. Thus, he was not excluded from the social norm in that, even if he was further from it than some.
Somewhere between that step and sexual matters, he was missing a portion of the focus. He knew, intellectually, that there had to be a reward for sex to be such a universal goal. Personally, he failed to see what it was.
Though, now he knew several dozen more things that one could do that he hadn't thought of, and was a bit horrified that he knew of now. Anal sex? Unsanitary in the extreme. Biologically, it made sense between males, as he knew personally that the prostate was a sensitive part of the body. It had not been a discovery that came about in a way he could say pleased him. Then again, anything to do with physical exams could hardly be said to please him.
Using ones mouth to bring another to completion didn't seem better, after being given thought, than anal sex had. With a female it would be horribly messy, and seemingly it was an attempt to drown oneself in woman-flesh. With a male, it was similar, though the drowning was a far more literal possibility, with a higher likelihood of unpleasantness in the case of a triggered gag reflex. That was if one was pretending that the other party had recently cleaned themselves properly.
Frowning even more intensely at the back cover of the book, he turned over a few other things in his mind. The use of hands and rubbing on people or objects. Not sanitary, but not bad either.
All options would direly require getting clean afterwards, of course, as physical completion was a terribly messy affair.
He just didn't see the point.
He drummed his fingers on the back of the book, eyes narrowing slightly, then he shifted to check what time it was. Late, but not late enough to be deemed early.
He had time enough to determine at least part of the puzzle that the book was the at the bottom of, so he decided that he might as well get that out of the way before he tried to sleep. Otherwise, he might just be stuck mulling over the concepts endlessly as he tried to pick them apart further than simple biological answers.
Nodding to himself, he pushed up to his feet and turned off the light, then drifted across the room and settled the book on a low shelf beside and just under his kitchen counter. There, it wouldn't be readily visible unless a person was looking for it. From that point, he moved to his bedroom, stripping and setting clothing aside to be cleaned or aired as needed, and he cast a quick glance around to be sure there was nothing he'd forgotten when he'd been distracted on arriving home.
He was glad when he drew a blank. He would have been more than slightly annoyed with himself if he'd been distracted by something so trivial before doing something more legitimate. Shaking off the thought, he slipped down the hall to his bathroom and closed the door behind him, not wanting to let the steam off the water escape out where it would cause water to condense on other walls. Bad enough the bathroom needed a weekly go over to keep it from showing signs of constant use. The hall didn't need such treatment as well.
Brushing aside the musings, he collected a towel from the closet and set it where it was easily in reach of the shower. After a moment, he fetched another and put it with the first, not in the mood to deal with water dripping from his hair for half the night just because he hadn't taken the time to dry it properly.
At that point, he decided that he was stalling. He was stalling from something that shouldn't be as much of an issue as he was making of it, and he was, in fact, likely winding himself up for no reason at all. He frowned at the shower, deciding it was at fault for the new turn of his thoughts, and then slipped inside to dial on the water, making sure the door was firmly closed beside him. There was a tub to it, but that wasn't the part he was concerned with just now. No, the part he was concerned with just now was getting the water just the right temperature of hot.
Then, he could figure out what all this sex business was about.
The thought made him want to grimace. Messy business that he'd just read a book about. He blamed Hojo for it even crossing his mind to do this. The bastard.
Of course, thinking about Hojo would doom the experiment to failure before he even tried. He knew hat plainly enough. He had to think about... appealing things if he wanted this to work. Peering down his body, he sighed out a low breath.
Right. Appealing things. Stepping sideways under the spray, he tipped his head so his hair didn't end up getting stuck to his chest, not seriously trying to get clean at the moment, and instead just focusing on the feel of the water. It was pleasant, and he closed his eyes, focusing on that for now. He would try to think of something more vivid later.
Water alone wouldn't make this work, he knew that, but it didn't stop him from taking the time to just stand either, feeling the way his hair got heavier and made water a bigger stream against his legs. It was a familiar sensation, soothing enough that he almost reached to just collect the soap so he could dismiss the matter altogether. He knew if he dismissed it now, it wouldn't bother him again any time soon, but he also knew he wouldn't try to continue the experiment later either.
His hand wavered, then pulled back, his eyes opening a moment later as he turned around, leaning his back against he tile of the shower wall. No, this was something that he should at least be able to say he'd tried. If for no other reason than that it pricked his pride to know he hadn't bothered with it up until now. He wasn't incapable of having an erection. He'd had them before. He just had to think about what he'd been doing to cause them those times that the issue had come up while he'd been out of bed.
No shadowboxing in the shower. He wasn't feeling pleasantly annoyed at the moment either, so that left simple friction to cause the matter. Turning over different things in his mind, he ran his fingers down his stomach to curve around himself, weighing the pale skin in his hand. All this fuss over a simple organ like that one. Focusing more on the -way- his hand felt than -what- his hand felt, he moved his thumb up and down across the skin, eyes half closed as he slowly roused himself. His other hand he had nothing to do with, so he ran that one absently over his own ribs, trying to remember if he'd tripped over any sensitive spots that might help things along.
He didn't remember any, not really, but the touch itself was helping some, sensitizing his nerves just a bit so that what his other hand was doing was more effective. Then again, the longer he toyed with his own body, the more cooperative it seemed to get to what he was currently wanting. Feeling a shiver run up his spine when he was hard enough he could move his entire hand, not just his fingers, he shifted so he was fully under the hot water again, feet carefully braced apart on the floor of the shower. It would be bad if he slid.
He had the thought that the sensations he was causing should have made him want to stop. Instead, he felt his hand move a bit faster, pulling more of them out, and he kept his gaze on his fingers, fixated on what he was doing even as he tried to pin down exactly what the feelings meant. They were good, positive feedback to his body, but they were odd too. There was an unpleasant edge under the wash of good, and he tightened his fingers a little, running his fingers over the more sensitive end deliberately, to see if that edge got worse or better.
His own reaction made him unsure which it was, and he drew in a shaky breath as he realized that he'd groaned. He knew he wasn't in pain, so that must just be a reaction? It had to be. He repeated it, more prepared for the jolt, and when he felt the urge to quicken his fingers, he did. There was no need to rush through this, but it felt like there was, and since his body knew this process better than he did, he didn't stop it.
Unfortunately, he wasn't quite as prepared for the climax as he thought he would be. Hand moving quickly to brace on the wall, he barely kept himself from sliding down to the bottom of the tub as he caught his breath, his other hand slowing to a stop as an odd mix of over-sensitivity and numbness washed over him. Vivid.
He didn't move for a few minutes, water washing away the hot stickiness that hadn't been dealt with initially, and he only tried to wash when he could touch himself without that odd aftereffect of feeling. He didn't linger long in the bath once he established that his body was under control again, his thoughts drifting back into his mind as the water was shut off and the towels were collected.
That was the point of sex. It was clear, obvious, and made some of his earlier musings seem silly. As he scrubbed water off his skin, he turned over some of the other points that had appealed to him far less. Intercourse, in all its incarnations, still seemed rather disgusting.
But, it was also just a bit intriguing.
He squeezed water out of his hair, then shook it free of the towel and scrubbed at it before moving to the bedroom, mostly dry.
What could make the sexual activities less repulsive? A cleanly partner, definitely. Something... hmm. Condoms. They made everything that much cleaner, he'd noted that well enough.
He would have to get some, especially if he wanted to expand outward from the evening's study. Not, of course, that he had any plans to do so. But, it would still be wise to be acquainted with the concepts.
In case he was asked, of course.
Dropping the towels in the hamper, he crawled into bed and pulled the blankets over himself so he could settle for sleep. He had a few things to look into the next day after all.
Purely for the sake of knowing.
