What's In My Bag Meme [01 Dec 2009|01:13pm]

bitterfig
What's In My Bag Meme from [info]fitz_carraldo.

full size

1. My purse. I’ve been using it for about a year and a half since I got is last spring at a “Share Your Stuff” exchange that was held at Whole Foods when I was working there.

2. A $25 Barnes & Noble giftcard—a couple of my co-workers gave it to me at my farewell party right before I left Chicago in September.

3. Chapstick from ALDI’s. Probably toxic.

4. An admissions badge from the Corning Glass Museum where my father and I stopped on our trip back from Chicago.

5. A purple Hello Kitty notepad.

6. My wallet—many years old and a bit overfilled. It’s pink and has the Sanrio character My Melody on it.

7. Bath & Body Works vanilla scented anti-bacterial hand lotion. I can’t use regular anti-bacterial gels because they dry my skin out but this works well.

8. Something my sister got for me this summer at G-Fest (a massive Godzilla collectors show). I think it’s some sort of a cell phone ornament from Japan of a Kewpie in a panda suit.

9. Condoms. Just because I haven’t had sex since 2002 doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be prepared.

10. Pens.

11. A crumpled tissue.

12. A zip-loc snack bag containing 3 quarters. Left over from when I was in an apartment and had to go out to the Laundromat to do my washing every week.

13. My leopard spotted Hello Kitty checkbook.

Work Fire [01 Dec 2009|09:35am]

Yesterday we were told to come in on Tuesday to help sort through what is salvageable and what  is not. But later we were called and told not to come in because "they" (not sure who that is) want to tear up the carpet and do something with the roof.

So now I'm trying to decide what to do. Usually I love a day off, but this sudden forced time off has got me off balance. I could go do some Christmas shopping, I could go sit somewhere not in the house and read, I could do some house stuff that I haven't had time for, but now that I have this time I can't decide what to do.

My library, where I work and complain about some coworkers, caught fire this morning.

Apparently a transformer blew (we've had problems in the past with that causing power outages) and somehow that triggered something in our workroom/boiler room. That area is destroyed, we're not sure how bad the rest of it is, the water damage and smoke. We get to go in tomorrow to start figuring it out. Luckily it happened about 7:30 am so only the person there was the custodian and he's ok. Not sure what happens next.

current and future reading [30 Nov 2009|11:57am]

bitterfig

A couple of days ago I finished reading Jean Plaidy’s Rose Without a Thorn, a historical novel about Katherine Howard (5th wife of Henry VIII—beheaded) and I’ve just started Cornelia Funke’s Inkdeath, the 3rd and final novel in her Inkworld trilogy. Inkdeath is going to take me a while to read. It’s 663 pages long and even though it’s a young adult novel the prose is dense and rich like liqueur.

Funke’s Inkworld series is all about books and reading. One of the characters, Fenoglio, is an author who is magically transported into his own book. However another character, Orpheus, has the ability to rewrite Fenoglio’s book and alter the reality therein.

Fenoglio wonders, “…was there any worse fate than having to watch something else twist your own words, adding colorful touches—in very bad taste—to the world you’d made?” Reading this I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of guilt as a writer of fan fiction. Like Orpheus, I delight in messing about with other people’s imagined worlds and adding lurid elements to their stories. I’ve always considered it quite a creative enterprise however Fenoglio’s dilemma does make me look at it from another perspective.

One thing I can take some consolation in is the fact that nothing in the Inkworld series is clean cut. Fenoglio, with his sense of authorship towards the world around him, is a very ambiguous character not nearly so much in control of the world he created as he would like to be.

When I finish Inkdeath, I’ve decided that I’m going to reread Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. I read it for the first time back in the fall of 2004 but I really plowed through it, I’d like to go back and do a more leisurely reading taking in more of the details.

current chapter word count: 5627
amount of chapter considered done: 55 - 65 %
in continuous text: 55 %
scene worked on today: Seishiro & Makoto
scene completed? yes, and properly fleshed out, actually adding to its importance.
what remains? Closing gaps and adding details to "When did you plan to tell me!?", then the rest of the story (at home & at the office)
and the rest of the scribbles? in the epilogue & the next story
character who can be surprisingly helpful if he chooses to do so: Seishiro
who is not exactly concentrating on the talk right then: also Seishiro
character who still finds him strenuous: Makoto
quote of the day: "We clean with water and fire, rice wine and prayer. And soap and disinfectant, if it's the kitchen."

Scans on a Sony Reader - the How To [29 Nov 2009|10:54am]

akk
[ mood | accomplished ]

After converting a few of my favorite scans into epub ebooks for the Sony reader (see here), I'm at the point to give a brief - but hopefully complete - "how to" of the process for best results:

Requirements:
Sony Reader (PRS-505 is my model, but I think any e-ink reader with the ability to deal with jpg images should work)
Calibre (freeware for ebook management)
Irfanview (freeware for pictures)
7-zip (freeware packer; any other packing software should be fine as well)

how to turn scans into ebooks )

It also works well if you have to handle heavily formatted A4 pdfs (and access to an automated scanner-to-files). There are e-book devices for handling full sized A4 pdfs, but they are almost as heavy as a small laptop, thus their advantage as a lightweight reading device for everywhere is pretty muched nulled. :)

current chapter word count: unknown (I don't count the words on 10+ A5 scribble pages!)
issues addressed (on paper): "I claim your life!", runes, Sakurantics, Yuelogy, and there's now a scene with a tipsy Subaru, which might or might not end up in the epilogue or Business As Usual.
quote of the day: "Don't worry. You were absolutely adorable."

related side-note: X-1 to X-18.5 in epub-format on the Sony reader - the one shelf of my book cases I always wished to have with me 24/7. Tomorrow will see TB (and the entering of the scribbles).

Ok. [info]nerilka24 and I just finished watching episodes 101 and 102 at [info]qaf_marathons.

But it's not to late for you to join the squee.

You can either:

A)Watch it later and follow along with our comments while you do so and join in with them. The beauty of the internets. Conversations can take place over days.

Or you can B) Come join me at [info]qaf_marathons in 30 minutes. At 10pm EST. For episode 512 and 513.

ETA: Nerilka had to go to bed. I will be on my own for 512 and 513. *sniffles*

101, 102, 512, and 513 Tonight! [27 Nov 2009|03:45pm]

not_yet_defined
Just a reminder We (hopefully it'll be a we and not just an I) will be watching the beginning and the end tonight at [info]qaf_marathons.

I will get started at 8pm EST, watch 101 and 102 straight through. Then probably take a few minutes intermission and then watch 512 and 513 straight through starting at about 10pm EST.

Please join me! :D

And if you've never marathoned with me before just an fyi that I don't often get very deep with my comments, but you can feel free to. Or stay on the shallow end with me.

Why am I doing this? Because I have an urge to watch them both in one sitting and look at where they all started out and where they ended up without a ton of focus tonight on the hows and whys they got there.

Stuffed and Tired [27 Nov 2009|02:38pm]

We did a variation on the turkey day and had steak instead. Yum. I'm not much of a turkey lover anyway, I eat it at times, but I don't love it.  Fun times, even if it was a smaller group than usual, which was actually better because I wasn't feeling all that social.

My back has been bothering me this week, not ouch painful don't want to move, but just enough to put a damper on the whole week and make me watch my movements.

I finished Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke and really DID NOT LIKE.
Mostly, it was twice as long as it needed to be to tell the story of these two gentleman magicians and there was a lot of nothing going on.

I've started Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. It's a little slow starting and I was a little confused at first with the different time periods but I'm starting to figure it out, so at 100 of 1000 pages I'm liking it.

unexpected Hardware Squee - Sony e-book reader [27 Nov 2009|02:13pm]

akk
[ mood | excited ]

Since this Wednesday, I'm the proud owner of a Sony PRS-505 e-book reader (in silver). I've been wary about e-book reading devices for a long time - expensive, incompatible proprietary formats, horribly overpriced e-books in Germany, DRM, intrusive companies (Amazon deleted bought books on the fly!) - but recently, Sony dropped the price for the key-operated device by a hundred euros, adopted the open standard epub along with its proprietary formats and - let's face it - the lack of inbuilt WiFi (in comparison to the Amazon devices) comes as a large plus with respect to my books & privacy, so...

Squee! )

In return. You must post at least one fandom post today as well. A drabble. A vid. Some icons. A discussion at [info]qaf_coffeeclub. Whatever you like.

Happy Black Friday!

Ready. Set. Go!

ETA: the most awesome [info]besamislabios won! and generously gifted the account to [info]bj_action in the hopes that it might see a little action soon. hmm...

I'm going to be home alone friday night and think I'd like to watch a few episodes.

Anybody want to join me?? I was thinking of doing 101, 102, 512 and 513. I like the idea of doing the beginning and the end back to back. I would probably start at 8pm EST.

:D Please let me know if there is any interest in this.
