Important- Caution about creating RSS feeds

We’re trying to get the word out that folks should NOT use actual usernames when creating RSS feeds from LJ to other services, as it may block those folks from creating new accounts at IJ (and presumably GJ and JF as well). Seems the RSS feed creates a “dummy account” at username@journalservice.com in order to feed out the incoming entries. Some of these RSS feeds at IJ now have a number of people who have picked them up. According to the response I got from IJ support, no one can delete the actual RSS feeds but the sysadmin. Anyway, I suggest that if you have tried to create an IJ (or GJ) account and found yourselves blocked, leave a comment here, so there is a list for the support ticket. Or even just to see if there are enough folks to affected to put in a support ticket.

And, just in case, if you're at IJ and have subscribed to a feed for someone who appears on the suport ticket list, you might want to check for a username variant in already place and switch to that instead, just in case the IJ sysadmin will delete some feeds for folks.

I made this mistake last week. And then I spent all weekend trying to get through to the support area, but I keep getting: "Sorry...We're currently experiencing some technical difficulties. Please try again in a few moments." Still getting it now. My friend who I was trying to get to come on over to IJ is not impressed...and I have to say, it's hard to convince people that this is the place to be when Support hasn't worked since Saturday. If anybody reading this can actually get through to the support team, then the name "caras_galadhon" needs to be removed so she can start a journal here.

Support isn't just one person, thank goodness. I believe there are eight. That may not be enough with so many new users.

Crap. So no matter where the feed is created, they are going to get blocked.

Yep. Or I should say, as long as its created at IJ, IJ will block them, and I'm guessing that RSS feeds created at GJ will block them from GJ, etc., etc. etc. Theroetically, folks creating feeds on LJ would block new creations at LJ, but I kinda figure if they didn't already have an account at LJ, you're unlikely to be creating it now.

Wish I had read the FAQ'a better before I started setting up feeds.

To clarify, I take it that if you created a RSS feed of joeblog's livejournal, with the username joeblog_lj, the dummy account would be joeblog_lj@journalservice, ne?

Correct. Thoose feeds I created with some sort of extension (ljamireal, or sheaf_lj) appear to have fake accounts sent up under exactly those names. Just click the RSS feed name from the syndecation page, and it will take you to a fake basic journal under that name.

I haven't checked this personally at GJ (the only other journal I have), but since almost all of these are based on the same Open Code, I would expect the same behavior at GJ, JF, and DJ.
